Default loss of gradients, including custom gradients

Help. I've recently encountered a problem I can't figure out the solution to in the gradient portion of photoshop 7.0.

The problem is this: The gradient name is there right where it should be. The gradient itself is missing entirely (meaning a totally blank box). When I've tried to go into the files and correct the gradient, I get nothing. It is as if the file is corrupted somehow.

With that said, yes, I've uninstalled ps7. I've rebooted the machine. I turned off any and all virus programs, etc. I made sure the default colors were in place (BW/WB). The gradients returned with the reboot, but when I went to test them, the same problem occurred. ACK, what am I doing wrong?

I have many gradients, including custom ones that I've created for special jobs. All of the gradients are stored not only in the default files but in at least one other file on the computer and have been backed up onto cd just in case the computer crashes. (I've learned the hard way to back up SMILE.) Even restoring them from backup files did not solve the problem.

Thanks in advance for any help.
