Just for your edification:
Leading (the space between lines of type, derived from actual, metal, lead shims—slugs—placed between lines of metal type in an old style typesetting rack, called a "chase") is generally set to default at 120% of the point size of the typeface you're working with; i.e.: 12 pt. type X 120% (or 12 X 1.2) = 14.4 pts. for leading. This distance is measured from the baseline of one line of text down to the baseline of the next line below it. When you choose "Auto" in the Leading drop-down menu in the Character Palette, it automatically calculates this spacing at 120% of your text point size. A higher number moves the lines farther apart (like you're inserting a thicker lead slug between those lines of metal type); a lower number moves them closer together.
