Default GoLive 5.0 - Trouble with Incremental Upload

I've recently re-installed (just about) all my s/w on a "new" computer. Everything is in the same directories as before. When I try to do an Incremental Upload, I get the familiar "Upload site" dialogue box. You know, the one with the animated blue & silver candy-stripe busy bar. And the message is, "Searching for newer files..." ; problem is: it's taking forever! I made a small change to just one file, just to test this out, and it probably took at least 3 minutes to find the changed file.

Everything else seems to work fine. I connect quickly; uploads happen at a good clip. It's just the searching thing.

Another point to mention: on my old, sh&%ty DELL Inspiron 1000, the above mentioned candy-stripe busy bar would never animate. Now on my brother's (probably likewise sh&%ty) Inspiron 8600, the bar *does* animate, albeit, rather slowly.

If anyone has seen this before and can give me some tips on problem resolution, I'd be most grateful. The ironic thing here is that I'm not doing a lot of web design work. Essentially, I maintain two sites I've developed. It's more on a personal basis (my brother's and my church's)... and the sites are graphically primitive. In fact, I do all the editing directly on the HTML code with WinXP's Wordpad. Point being, the *only* thing I actually use GoLive for is to sync with the servers.

Anyway, thanks in advance for whatever help you can give me.

So far, it looks like nobody has any thoughts on how I might resolve this. I haven't found anything either.

I have actually timed the amount of time it's taking to scan the site directory for new files; the time: 3 min, 20 sec. Also, while this is going on, the CPU is pegged at 100% utilization.

I have to say, this is as frustrating as it is inexplicable.

And this brings me to a related question which I'll pose in a new thread.

Oh well… thanx anyway.

I'm not really sure what you're running into - I always used the Upload Modified command instead of Incremental Upload... If you're sure your files are in sync with the server, does it help to do a "Sync Modification Tims > All" command (I believe that's under the Site > Publish Server menu), then save the site window and re-start GoLive?

Nate-

You've saved me... or at least you've saved me a lot of grief!

Turns out, that was my problem all along: you see, I'd been using the upload button with my previous install (on my old computer) and I hadn't realized that I'd set that button to "Upload Modified." When you do a new install, it defaults to "Incremental Upload." In fact, I'd forgotten completely that you can change the action launched by that button; so, was assuming that if clicking that button worked before, it should work now. I'm certain now, that I, too, was probably doing an "Upload Modified" all along. And I just needed a hint to get back on the right path.

I've just tried several iterations of "Upload Modified" and it works just like it always used to—real quickly!

In the course of reacquainting myself with these two different upload options, I consulted the online (html-based) help and found this passage: “Modified-item uploads copy only new site files and site files that have been modified in Adobe GoLive since the previous upload. (If a local file has been modified outside of Adobe GoLive, it won't be uploaded whatever its modification date is.)”

As far as I can tell, this statement is patently false, since virtually all my modifications are done outside GoLive, but they're always detected and uploaded.

In any event, thanks for your reply. It really is a HUGE help!

Careful with modifying your pages outside GL. You can lose references to your actions (among other things) and cause yourself a lot of headaches.

I appreciate the "word to the wise," and I don't doubt that if I were using GoLive consistently, and then, on occasion made mods outside of it, I could get myself into a lot of trouble. In my case, though, my website work is limited; I'm routinely just editing the HTML files with Windows Wordpad and using GoLive primarily (perhaps I should say "exclusively") for updating the server. For these purposes, as mentioned above, I've never seen GoLive miss file modifications that were made via Wordpad.

For most people, I'm sure your advice is quite relevant and to be heeded.
