I have to design a logo for a boat. The client wants it to be just letters. Illustrator is the best for this, right? Any idea of what fonts I should use?

And what is an appropriate rate for this?

When in doubt, use Helvetica. Charge about a dollar-two-eighty-five.

Nilk,

If all you need to do is put together the client's name in a particular font, and the client is a small business, I would say charge for one hour's worth of work. If you have to buy a particular font, add that to the price.

You might try looking at fonts at http://www.font.com.

I'm going to use a free font. What is the common rate for logos for free-lance artists? This client asked me my rates. I asked him what he was offering. He said $80. Is that reasonable?

For just text I think I'd jump on that one, but I guess it would depend on where you're located. I live in a smaller town.

Nilk,

In my opinion, for what you are doing $80 is fair. I assume this is a small business.

You can always work your way up to higher prices on projects that require more work, skills, etc. If you are new to this area of business with graphics, I'd say it's a nice easy way to make $80.

It also depends on your idea. If you're gonna just give them striaght type, $80 is not worth it. But make something special out of it.
Just remember to keep it as one color, because if this is going to be their logo, there going to want to use it in several different ways. For instance, I wouldn't use RGB or CMYK or the effects that change the color to CMYK. I would either just use black or use a Pantone spot color.
