Illustrator CS2 align stroke and appearance

Why doesn't align stroke work if adding stroke via appearance palette? Do you know of any other align stroke quirks? (i.e. it doesn't work with text -- you need to convert text to outlines)

My bad... I should have ungrouped the objects first before applying the fill and stroke. It's now working as expected.
