Default placed jpgs are making my files huge

Why is a 1.5mb jpg making my AI file nealy 70mb? there are no complex paths or massive areas of transparency so I'm at a loss to explain it. I had one yesterday with 4 placed jpgs (all around the 1-1.5mb size) which ended up 290mb, which the G5 choked on slightly.

Its a bit of a puzzler.

jpegs are a compressed format...when you read their size (cmd i) you are reading the compressed size...when you place them...they expand to their real size...try making one of them a tiff in photoshop...to see the real size....then place....and don't embed...good luck

OK, yeah I think I knew that. It makes sense anyway, cheers. So the trick would be to make images in photoshop really small (in terms of pixel dimensions, not compression) for positioning then substitute bigger versions later.

Cheers for the explanation..
