Default Adobe InDesign CS3 5.0 OS X 10.5.2 Can't see white text on black cover

Hi,

I have just installed InDesign and have opened a Pagemaker document. It went pretty well except for the front and back cover. They are a dark pattern with reversed type that's white so you can see it.

I see what looks like text blocks, but I can't get the text to show. Even if I type new text it shows up briefly as I put it in place, but then disappears.

Pagemaker had a move forward, backward move but the Window>Arrange>Bring All to Front doesn't do it. Can someone tell me the secret?

Thanks,

Ty Ford

Well, everything can't possibly be in front. Think about it: it is a stack. One item only in front, one at the very back, and the others arranged in between. Select the picture or darkest object with the black arrow, and Object > Arrange > Send to Back. Then select others and now use Send Backwards until you can see the white type.

Al

Edit: That only works for objects within a layer. If there are layers in this file, move them up/down in the layers palette.

rrr.

Very frustrating. I can see the red text blocks. Would that mean they are on the top?
Still no text. I can read the text in the story editor, so I know it's there.

I can create a new text block and see it in the clear, but when I slide it over my dark background in the document, the type disappears regardless as to whether it;s black or white.

Pagemaker was a lot easier.

I appreciate your efforts to help me.

This is making me nuts.

Text wrap? How about red type?

That sounds like there are layers, and that you are creating the new text in a layer below the dark object/picture. Do you see layers in the layers palette?

Check if any of your frames have textwrap on.
Change stackingorder of objects and move them up and/or down in the stackingorder.
Open the Layers palette and look which Layers you have. I have a dim memory of PM-converted documents that put some masterpage items on locked layers.

I'd try switching to High Quality Display (View/Display
Performance ...) It may be that the image's resolution is obscuring
the text.
