Default Interlocking letters: Pen tool? tutorial?

I have found Photoshop tutorials on creating interlocking letters by erasing the overlapping section of the foreground letter, but I think I have seen a path or scissors method of doing this. Even if I haven't, there must be one, but I can't figure out a way. It's especially tricky when dealing with letters such as O, which become, effectively, compound paths. Scissors doesn't work on letters, it seems, even after creating outlines and trying to make the frame a graphics frame.

Can anyone provide a tutorial link or suggest the proper approach?

Exclude overlap, in the pathfinder palette. Can't figure out how to ungroup a line of text converted to outlines. Easy in Illustrator, though.

Perhaps this helps (when you wring it through Babelfish?):

There is a link in there to a related post by David Blattner, too.
