Default Do You Take Leftover Rolls From A Restaurant?

It's annoying and embarrassing to me when I see people shove their
pockets and purses full of the crackers and whatever else is in the
breadbaskets at restaurants. Even worse the condiments. We don't eat
out much but we're in the process of moving so we've been ordering out
more and actually took a late night break and went to a sit down
restaurant. When the server brought a basket of rolls I was surprised
to see a clip on the side with a note of how they were glad to offer
their patrons fresh rolls from their bakery and welcomed us to take
any leftover contents home with us. I've never seen this before. The
basket had a large pile of packaged crackers topped with 7 rolls and 3
blueberry muffins. All for just 2 of us. When we were done eating
our server asked us if we would like containers for our leftover
dinners. This was fine as I'd prefer to pack my own up. She brought
those along with a bakery bag for the rolls. The bag was the second
surprise as I figured they would expect you to cram the rolls in the
leftover container. The third surprise was when she said "you both
look stuffed and probably don't want dessert. I'll mark your check
and they'll pack up whatever you want from the bakery counter when you
leave. So we had half of our meals, a bag of bread, and 2 nice pieces
of cheesecake to take home. We had liver and onions and meat loaf.
Both ala cart with soup and potatoes. The bill was only $25. I'm
packing for our move again today so the leftovers will make a nice
meal for tonight.

Is it common for them to let you have the rolls or do you take them
anyway? LOL I thought they just tossed them back in the vat to give
to someone else.

Good for the restaurant. In another lifetime, when I waited tables for
a while, I quickly learned that even the packaged (sealed in
cellophane) crackers and condiments could NOT be returned to another
patron's table and re-offered to anyone else. They were all supposed
to be thrown away when cleared. The same is true, of course, of the
unwrapped goodies like breadsticks, bread and rolls. The patron might
as well take them home; if the establishment is doing what they should,
they will be thrown out, anyway. (I certainly wouldn't want to wonder
if my rolls and bread had been sneezed on, or worse, would you?)

Sounds like a great place- too bad that most of the time, bread/rolls
have been given no thought to at all- just to have something there!
Back to your question- One time we were at an Italian family style
restauant in Ocidental, CA. They brought you minestrone in a big soup
tureen. We were watching a couple take soup out of the tureen and pack
it into an ice cream carton they had brought. Tacky, but what does the
restaurant do with the uneaten soup anyway? I don't even want to think
about it.

I always take leftover rolls/bread.
By law, once that stuff has been on a customer's table, they have to be
thrown in the trash.....

Who knows what could have been on other people's hands, or if the food
got sneezed or coughed on?????

I hope to god that no place ever puts leftover rolls out for other
customers!

Ew!!!!!!

I normally wouldn't eat the rolls for that reason. I've never worked
in a restaurant but I'd be surprises if a few rolls didn't get
"recycled" LOL. Food hygiene is one of the main reasons I'd prefer to
cook at home.

Heh, well I can't say as I've taken the contents of the breadbasket,
but I have slipped the wrapped crackers that come with soup into
my pocketbook. It just hits the trash if I don't take it.

Hmmm. On vacation, the room had a kitchen and a coffee
maker (of course), and I drink iced tea. I don't put sugar in
my iced tea, but I'd take a couple of packets of sugar and ...
okay ... steal them. (laugh) I could have used them in my tea!
This way we didn't have to buy all this sugar that would wind up
being thrown out after the week we were there. But I never took
more than I would have used in my tea, one or two packets.

Is that rationalizing? I hardly think I'm hurting anyone, anyway.

If I order breakfast from room service, I get whatever amounts
to some muffins, juice, whatever. Continental breakfast. I have
been known to steal the little jars of jam, and once? the miniature
ketchup bottle (it was for Stan!) that inexplicably came with it.

I have had that happen, it feels weird to me. Wrapping up my own leftovers.

Sounds like a nice meal, and nothing wrong with getting another
meal out of it, I say.

That would be a no no.

It is a good place. It's been several years since I've been there and
I don't think they did the roll thing back then. My liver and onions
was great and the rolls were fresh.

I've seen people bring zip locks to buffets. How sad to be such scum.
I once saw someone wrap shrimp up in a napkin and shove it in her
purse. I wonder how that smelled when she got home.

I don't want to think about that soup either.

I did not know that was a law. Is that a local, state or federal thing?

Or there were kids at the table that didn't wash there hands after
they wiped their butt. LOL

I have no proof, but my common sense tells me it happens.

I agree

Not sure, just what I've been told when I've discussed this sort of
thing with the boss when I worked in food service many years ago. :-)

If the bread is REALLY GOOD, yes. The restaurant is just going to toss
them out when they clear the table - they're not allowed to recycle
them to someone else (and would you really want to eat old bread that
somebody random has been groping around in?) 'Wrapped' condiments, no,
unless they were served to me on my plate in which case I've paid for
them and I can do with them what I will. It's tacky to raid a table of
stuff that isn't 'yours'.
