RIP, Green Street Grill
This summer, I went to Green St. Grill a couple of times, having not
been there for a long time (I think I'd gone there only once since the
renovation). The first time, I had the goat curry, which was way too
spicy, but great nonetheless (I had been warned about the heat, so it
was my fault). The second time, I had the jerk chicken, which was
fantastic, and was a huge plate with lots of interesting sides. I told
the waitress how great it was, and she said "You've got to try the pork
next time, it's my favorite".
Well, last night I went back with just that idea. To my amazement and
distress, I found when I opened up the menu that all the familiar dishes
had been replaced with others named "Yankee Pot Roast", "Clambake", etc.
Gone were the friendly, attentive, tattooed waitresses. I asked the
waiter if the chef had changed, and he said yes, they had a new chef
since Sept 1, and had changed the menu completely, and all the food was
fantastic.
I wound up ordering the pork loin ($21), which took an awful long time
to come out, and was rather cold on arrival. It was just three slices
of pork loin, nicely prepared and tasty, but definitely on the light
side, portion-wise. It came on top of some applesauce and nuts, again
tasty, but not too exciting. It left you hungry. My companion had the
hanger steak ($22), which was again a rather small portion.
Cuisine-wise, it's a lot more similar to Henrietta's Table than to the
old GSG, except the food at Henrietta's (which is great; I'm not
knocking it) is much better and more plentiful. All that hearty,
autumnal, Yankee stuff. Talk about a 180-degree change... It's as if
your favorite rock station had gone easy listening.
I am really crushed. Green St. Grill had been a haven for funky, spicy
food since the 80s. During that time, it had had its ups and downs,
but in the main it was good, and lately, great. I had eaten there many,
many times. Now, it's gone. They shouldn't even call it Green St.
Grill anymore. They should just change the name.
Yankee Fucking Pot Roast.
