Default calphalon in the dishwasher is this a healther concern

Hi,

We have a TJ MAX bought Calphalon Anodized aluminum saucer pan that has
been put through dishwasher serveral times lately. I noticed large
area of discoloration both inside and out and some area simply shows
the underneath shining aluminum. When I rub my finger against the
surface, I see black/grey stuff coming off it.

I only found out online today that dishwashing a calphalon like that
is a big no no, since the pan did not have any packaging or instruction
pamphlet when we bought it from TJ Max. I dont really care about the
warrenty at this stage and just want find out: What exactly is this
black/grey stuff coming off the pan? Is it harmful to health?

Any information is appreciated.

Thanks.

Ling

Straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Try the calphalon website at
<http://www.calphalon.com/calphalon/consumer/jhtml/useAndCare.jhtml;jsessionid=QPRLFT4JW3EBGCQHUB2CGW QKA4QGIJCK>

or better yet,
<http://tinyurl.com/g4alb>

or from the original website
<http://www.calphalon.com> and select "use & care" at the bottom of the
page.

HTH.

Sorry, but I don't. I've never used calpahlon before, so I have no
clue. I just thought I'd reference their website if you didn't already
know about it. Too bad it wasn't much help to answer the questions you
have.

The residue is most likely aluminum oxide. Aluminum Oxide is not
harmful at all.

You could try emailing your question to Calphalon. There should be a link
on the website that Skyhooks pointed you to. Just tell them which version
of Calphalon you have (Calphalon One Anodized, Calphalon One Nonstick,
Calphalon Profressional, Simply Calphalon, etc.). I've emailed Calphalon
with other questions and they did get back to me very quickly (a day or two
at most).

In article <1149792405.418264.58050@j55g2000cwa.googlegroups. com>,
zhangling@gmail.com says...

Calphalon pans are anodized aluminum. This means that an aluminum pan is
treated electrochemically to give it a thin coating of aluminum oxide, a
very hard and durable material. Unfortunately it dissolves in dishwasher
detergent, hence the warning. It won't come off any more in cooking. No
safety issue.

Just curious. Is it feasible to re-anodize Calphalon pans? If anyone has
had this done before, perhaps you could describe the results.

Thanks, Steve in Ft. Worth.

It's my opinion that it would cost more to do it than the pan is worth. I
suppose one could find a plating shop that might take the task on, but it
would probably be more worth one's efforts to either find a new replacement
pan at a cheap price, or to buy a used one on eBay or elsewhere.

Regarding the hard anodization, I believe the dark gray color on these pans
is from a dye, not from the anodization itself. I tried looking for what the
chemical composition of the dye might be, but no luck. I was wondering if it
were safe to ingest... the original poster's question. I'd think it is
essentially safe though, being used in cookware.

Aside from gray, anodized aluminum can be made in lots of wonderful colors
via a dye. Remember the rainbow of colors those anodized aluminum tumblers
came in back in the 1950s and 60s? In recent years these have reappeared on
the market.

Anodizing aluminum is easy. We used to do it to power transistor
heatsinks. The color is a dye that is put on during the process.
