Default My dino shoot

Last Saturday my friend Jackie and I went
downtown to shoot dinosaurs. (Pittsburgh
is currently having DinoMite Days similar
to the Cow Parade but with dinosaurs instead.
There are 3 types - T. Rex., Stegosaurus, and
Torosaurus (similar to Triceratops.) We took
the bus from Oakland about 8:30am and got off
at Grant and Forbes downtown. We wended
our way toward the river via Grant and
then headed toward the point via the Blvd.
of the Allies mostly, making the necessary
side trips to pick up all the dinos. Saw the
3 at Point State Park and then headed up
through Gateway Center to Stanwix and Liberty
where we "slew" a few more and then on up
Liberty.

We stopped for lunch at Cielito Lindo, a
new Mexican restaurant at 633 Smithfield St.
I read a review by Munch and it sounded good.
I had the Tacos Dorados de Papas - fried potato
tacos - and another dish whose name I can't
recall exactly - it was pork and pineapple
soft tacos. Both were delicious. They both
came with only rice. I wish I had known as
I could have asked for beans with one of them.
The rice was mediocre. I also had an horchata.
Jackie had the vegetarian enchiladas. She said
they were a bit cold in the middle. I think they
were made ahead and reheated but not sufficiently.
Bummer. She had a Latin American fruit juice
product called Boing! We liked the name. It seems
the food can be good here but you have to watch
what you order. I had wanted to order the tamales
which were on the breakfast portion of the menu but
they were all gone. Bummer. I can't see myself
ever getting downtown early enough in the am to
get the tamales. :-(

So from there we headed back over toward the
bus station and picked up a few more dinos and
then back along Grant St. to get the ones at
the USX plaza and Mellon Bank. On the way I
started getting a charley horse in my right
leg and had a hard time walking. I had done
more walking that morning than I usually do in
a month! Then I started getting one in my
other leg so for a while there I was afraid Jackie
would have to carry me to the bus stop! However
after I rested a while I was able to gradually
make my way to the bus stop. Unfortunately we
passed up a few of the "off-the-beaten-track"
dinos. Bummer!

We caught the bus at Grant and Fifth about 3pm.
I calculated later that we got 37 of the 44
downtown dinos. Of course, I could barely move
for the next 2 days, but I took Monday off and
was back to work on Tuesday. Naturally we
photographed all the dinos so I will have pictures
as soon as I can afford to get them developed.
I took Zoe the Diner Cat along and she posed with
each of the dinos. She was quite brave, allowing
herself to be placed in the mouths of several of
the T. Rexes. It was a lovely day, although the
strong breezes did create somewhat of a problem
for Zoe as she was blown off of several dinosaurs
and took quite a spill. Luckily she is very light
and thus sustained no serious injuries. :-)

All in all a good time was had by all.

Zoe the Diner Cat is my brown stuffed cat (who looked
more like a bear with a long tail named Guenther before
I added a lovely straw hat adorned with yellow ribbons
and flowers). She fairly fluffy in spite of being
technically a shorthair. All who were at the 2002 CT
Cook-In and the 2002 VT Cook-In have met Zoe as she
came along to check out diners along the way. Zoe
is not averse to other culinary adventures aside
from diners, so she has been to the 2 cook-ins
as well as Indian, Tibetan, Tapas, Middle Eastern,
Mexican, and other restaurants. I have many pictures
of Zoe at the various places we have visited. If you
like I can e-mail you one.

Zoe also attended my cousin's wedding and was photographed
with the bride and groom. A few months ago she attended
the law school graduation of a friend's daughter. She's
been all over Pennsylvania and New England. She's been
on the Erie C**** and on Cadillac Mountain in Acadia N. P.
She's been in NYC to visit Margaret and her furry friends
(stuffed and unstuffed) and meet Barb. This list goes
on.
