Now that gas is so expensive we felt we had to multi task when we went
for a ride yesterday. So we started at Iggy's wholesale in Fresh Pond.
Ate some very garlicky flatbread pizza for lunch, bought some croissant
for Sunday and they gave us a bag of dinner rolls for free! Then we
headed out Rte. 2 to Rte. 225 and went to Wilson's Farm. We bought
local produce, radishes, romano beans, corn, tomatoes, spinach, red and
savoy cabbage, basil, all beautiful, and also a blueberry bread for
Sunday.
We decided to head back to town on Mass Ave and ran into Penzey's just
over the Arlington line. Wow, it really is a wonderful store!
Really pleasant and helpful staff greeted us a the door. The set up is
what makes it work. Spices are grouped by type on tables. Each display
has various sizes of bottled spice, starting around 2 dollars, and a
large glass apothocary jar of the spice which you are encouraged to
open and smell. The variety was amazing and they feature their own
blends, like Greek spice, something I've run into in recipes but never
saw in the store. There are lots of free recipes that are simple and
make buying the products really tempting. We got out of there 20
dollars later when our sense of smell started to shut down. They have a
catalog and a website but going there was really worth while and our
usual Thanksgiving recipes should be very flavorful this year.

I'm impressed! We went to Penzey's shortly after it opened and I
couldn't get out of there with less than $50 of goods!

And that was two bottles of double-strength vanilla !! ;-)

I bought their taco seasoning to try and it is SO much better than the
commercial stuff you can't imagine. Good with hamburg, but even better with
ground turkey or chicken. Light, yummy.

You are making me so jealous! I have to get down to Penzy's. Supposedly it
is really close to my favorite needlework shop.

Ok. Where is it located exactly? And is it just some spice mecca or do
they have other products?

It's right on Mass. Ave. between Arlington Heights and Arlington Center.
It used to be a Boston Market, so you have some idea of the scale of the
store. It is entirely herbs and spices, vanilla, cocoa, and their own
blends. It has become my favorite place to buy wedding gifts, as they
package to order, very nicely. Go look at their site <www.penzeys.com>

Their stuff is fresh and wonderful, and they have jars of everything for you
to sniff before buying. It really makes a difference in my cooking.
