I submit the following categories for dealing with ages of children under age 6
years:

birth- lifting head and looking around = newborn
lifting head- crawling = infant
crawling- walking = baby
walking- talking in full sentences understandable to strangers = toddler
talking- first grade = preschooler
1st grade and older = give age in years

Naturally there will be considerable overlap.
I believe Marie still has newborns.

Your categories are not consistent with the actual definitions of
those terms. A newborn is a baby (or animal or whatever) that is
recently born; has nothing to do with its ability to lift its head.
An infant is the same thing as a baby. Premature infants are
classified a little differently; a baby that was born two months
premature is not considered to be two months old two months after its
birth. When babies learn to walk, they're called toddlers. Ability to
walk normally precedes speech, particularly speech in full sentences
understandable to strangers (which may not occur until age 3 or 4).
Preschoolers are children past the toddler stage who are under school
age, which is generally 5. Etc.

As Sarah said, Marie has infants who were born prematurely.

Thanks for the proper definitions. I was going by the way I hear the words used
conversationally. Either way, we're all in agreement that Marie does not have
toddlers-- yet. (And Jack will be cheerfully hounded for his error:-)

Well, when I have no idea how old they are exactly, I usually go with
"toddler."

BTW, my own definition of toddler is someone who's too young to throw
a football, but too old to wear diapers.

Works for me.
