Default What happened to Casa Mexico (Cambridge)?

Went there tonight, and it was closed. According to a sign on the front
door, this looks permanent. Well it's been around since 1967 so maybe
the owners just decided to retire? Anyone know the story? We were just
there a few weeks ago and saw no indication of the restaurant's imminent
demise.

In any event now I need a good Mexican restaurant in the Cambridge /
Boston Metro West area. Any recommendations?

Thanks,

While it's true that it's been around since 1967 and it's possible the
owners decided to retire, these things are unlikely to be related, as
it hasn't been under its original ownership in quite some time. I know
this only because I slightly knew the original owner, and he had moved
on to open another restaurant (the now-long-deceased 9 Knox) by about
1970.

I don't know anything about any of the other owners, or why it's
closed. I haven't been there in quite a while.

Although it's a few years since I've been there, I always thought Cafe
Olé, just off Inman Square, was quite nice.

While not exactly Cambridge, one of the best is "Tu Y Yo" in Somerville.
It is located near Tufts University and is very close to Porter Square
in Cambridge. They are authentic Mexican so they don't serve burritos
or other greasy tex-mex fare.

Another good one is Cafe Ole in Imman Square in Cambridge.

: Ol?, just off Inman Square, was quite nice.

A couple of years ago I noticed that both the prices and the "fanciness"
went up, but the part that I care about (ie "taste") didn't really seem
to improve any. Too expensive for what one gets, IMO

I like The Forest Cafe. It is on mass ave, I think the address is 1800 something or other. It is a tiny hole in the wall place directly across from the gigantic Cambridge Common. cool place.

Sol Azteca. Haven't been to the Newton location, but the one on Beacon St
near Kenmore Square is surprisingly good. And a marguerita on the rocks sure
helps chase away the winter blues.

I'll put in my 2 cents for Taco El Paso in Everett, at 15 Norwood St. I got
takeout from there tonight.. it's good, and really cheap. For less than $14.00
including tax, I got: 1 steak taco (served open-faced), 2 chicken tamales, 1
large (it's huge!) veggie burrito, 1 horchata (sweet rice drink), 1 beef tongue
enchilada, 1 pork enchilada. Great stuff!

Default Mexican coffee (was Re: What happened to Casa Mexico (Cambridge)?)

Rats. Just last weekend I was thinking it was about time to head back
up there for some Mexican coffee. They made a delicious non-alcoholic
Mexican coffee, spiced but sweet. I have tried other versions of
"Mexican coffee" and attempted to make my own, but nothing was ever
close to Casa Mexico's.

Does anyone know what I am talking about? Can anyone suggest another
place to get comparable Mexican coffee? Or how about a recipe? I am
told that some sort of spice syrup may be the key ingredient, but no
one I talked to knew more details.

As far as good Mexican food goes, my favorite is "Taqueria La
Mexicana" in Union Square, Somerville, http://www.lataqueria.com/ .
Very authenic, fresh, and cheap.
