Default What Restaurant is This

Darn! After many years of searching, I bookmarked something
about a restaurant I enjoyed many times about 20 years ago.
It is a very big place on the coast, just over the border of
Mass. and NH in Maine. Has great lobster, real strawberry
shortcake (with biscuits) and a huge salad bad. As you travel
north, it is on the right side of the road, perhaps down an
embankment. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Thanks,

I work just a few minutes away from Warren's. From North Andover, where I live, I'd
say it is about 50 minutes driving time. From closer to the city, well over an hour.

I've been there a handful of times, for lunch, but I'm lukewarm on the place. I guess
I'm not a huge fan of salad bars. I was there last Monday, for example, and the lettuce
bowl was mostly brown. Another bowl, with mixed greens, had a pretty high percentage of
rotting leaves.

But...it's a popular place...and relatively easy to get to. It is right on the other
side of the Rt 1A bridge, from Portsmouth.

Uh-oh. Maybe it was better 20-ish years ago. Okay, where
else can one get a nice lobster and strawberry shortcake? I
may have visitors from out of the area and have been babbling
about those goodies. (speaking of late spring or early
summer, I think)

Jean,

I wouldn't discount Warren's. I haven't been there recently myself, but I
know lots of people who go often and really enjoy it. Maybe you could give
it a try yourself sometime before your guests come -- see what you think.
For a nice lobster in the rough experience in the summer (not sure they ever
have strawberry shortcake, but you could even bring it with you), there's
always Chauncey Creek. http://chaunceycreek.com/

Another vote of confidence for Warren's; last visit was last August-- I have
not had an experience like the negative one mentioned above.

I would certainly visit again. The entrees were excellent, and I thought that
their salad bar was up to their usual standard, and certainly boasted more
choices than the average salad bar.

All I said was that I'm lukewarm on it! Also that I'm not usually a fan of
salad bars...this is based on probably six visits in the last year, and obviously
its not enough to keep me from returning (most recent trip was last Monday).

That being said, the freshness is, on occasion, suspect in the salad bar. I'm
not trying to axe grind here, it's just that I don't much care for brown and
rotting lettuce in salad bars (that's one of my pet peeves...some places will
mix in fresh greens - daily - with old greens, with the result being eventual
rotting greens. There's also the matter of taking large heads of lettuce and just
hacking them into pieces. Sometimes you get hunks of lettuce cores, which to
me shows a lack of attention to detail...its one of many reasons why I don't
care much for salad bars and Warren's -- unfortunately -- seems to be no different).

Seafood-wise, I wouldn't rate it any different than a number of places around
Portsmouth/Kittery. Most places I've tried have been pretty good, and Warren's
meets expectations there too.

I'm just not sold on the salad bar, though. I find most salad bars to be average to
below average, and Warren's meets expectations (for me) there too.

I sure agree with you that brown, rotting lettuce in any salad bar is gross
and maybe indicates the place's general attitude toward freshness and
cleanliness. I'm wary of salad bars at all and am amazed how much some
people love them.

I lived across the street from Warren's for three years...ate there 3-4
times each year...IMHO it was always decent but mostly bland/ forgettable
food. Good salad bar if you like that sorta thing...

I've heard this place is good but haven't tried it yet (probably more $$
than Warren's)...

Pesce Blue looks interesting, but their average seafood dish costs $23.00.
They also have a web site, but it's heavy on the Java/Flash schtick so be
warned...
