And no smelly lighter fluid - the chimney thing is nice. 3-4 sheets of
newspaper and it's started.

I've been using a chimney for eons now - what a difference that makes. I use
lump charcoal rather than briquettes.

Well, there goes my suggestion.

However, a Big Green Egg will last forever. How long will any thin
metal grill last, and after you've replaced them enough times you 'll
find you could have bought an Egg.

I purchased the Chargriller and Smoker and would recommend it. It is
very versatile. You can do long and slow barbecuing using the side
chamber, indirect grilling or direct grilling in the main chamber. I
bought one at Lowes last year, it was around $180, and they assembled it
no charge.

I was thinking about getting something that would last 3-5 years and start
putting $$$ aside for the Egg. But my grills have generally lasted 7-12
years. And the last one was free......

Well I'll throw in my 2 cents. Have a look at the Weber Smokey mountain. It
has 2 grills stacked vertically, and the firebox sits at the bottom, so you
can use both grills for smoking. You can raise the firebox to the middle,
and use the top grill for grilling. I use mine through most of the winter
without too much trouble. They run about 225 now...

(Please note that hockey players like ribs, and pulled pork :-) )

Please - I have a "kosher" hockey player. Hates pork.

Now - good grilled steak is an all together different beast.

Well, you've just eliminated most of the reasons to get a smoker.
There's still brisket but without pulled pork, ribs, and fatties your
smoking experience will be limited.

I've wondered if he tried something other than the school pork chops he'd
like it.

How does he know he hates pork if he can't eat it? Unless he
fell off the kosher wagon..
