Default Waitrose recipes

Our small local Waitrose has started putting out laminated cards with
recipes on them, as selected by various members of staff within the
store (not the coloured cards they always do). I picked up one for tuna
last week so shall try it this evening. Are other Waitrose stores doing
this or only ours?

The seared tuna steaks with salsa verde were lovely last night.
Followed by the lovely iced apple loaf and strawberries. I tried the
old '70's trick of putting black pepper on the strawberries to
counter-balance the sweetness of the ice-cream and it worked well.

My local Waitrose isn't. However, it doesn't seem to do much out of the
ordinary.

I think that Waitrose was forced into buying this store. It was originally a
Safeway. Morrisons bought Safeway out but some government agency kicked up a
stink about them having my local one. There are Morrison's supermarkets in
the larger towns to the east and west, both about 17 miles away, and so
having a Morrison's in my town was considered anti-competitive. It ended up
being a Waitrose.

I'm not at all impresssed with the choice available from this branch of
Waitrose. Of any specific item, you can have one big name brand and a
Waitrose own brand. Nothing else. But, on the other hand, the quality of
their meat, bread and vegetables is absolutely first rate.

And - very important to me - they *do* have a very wide choice at their
cheese counter! Today I got a piece of ordinary white Stilton, white
Stilton with ginger, oak-smoked Wensleydale and a piece of Manchego. Yum!
:-)

Ours was a Safeway too (Harrogate) as was the one in Otley. I think the
quality is good, my only gripe about the meat being that it tends to be the
posher cuts (Safeway used to do some good shinbeef but Waitrose offers this
very rarely and calls it something more refined, I forget what) and also
that most of the stuff is from the south of England. A bit of Yorkshire lamb
would not come amiss.
We have the recipe cards too, they have been on display for ages.

My local Waitrose does Welsh or New Zealand lamb, depending on the time of
year.

Have you tried a good (i.e., expensive) balsamic?

Why not ask for one of their suggestion forms to fill in? I have found,
over the past 20-odd years that they do listen to their customers. I
don't buy much meat or fish from them as we have a good local butcher
and a fishman from Grimsby who comes to the door every week.

No. Well, I have tried one but not on strawberries, although I have
seen it in recipe books.

It sounds very odd to be putting balsamic vinegar on strawberries, but you
never know. I had a great uncle who used to insist on putting brown sugar
on his new potatoes. I thought that was weird until I actually tried it.
