Default Can anyone identify this food item?

This food product was bought in an Indian grocery and I'm trying to
find out what it is. It came in a plastic bag, not chilled or frozen.

http://www.chris.blunt.name/food/food.htm

The bag has a list of food names printed on the back, one of which I
guess was supposed to have been marked to indicate its contents, but
either someone forgot to mark the bag, or its not actually one of the
items on the list.

Each of the pieces are about 3cms diameter and very hard.

I'd be interested to know what this is. Do I need to cook it, and if
so, how? How is it normally served?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Chris

Chris
I am sure its none of the things that are listed. Thats why maybe they were
not ticked. I have had a good look at the food items and my guess would be
that its what is called "sandige" in South India. I might be wrong here.
Where did you buy this ? If it is what i think it is, then the way to go
about eating it is to fry them deep in oil like the poppodums. After you fry
them the stuff should not be hard enough to bite into it and eat it. Served
along with other food as a side dish. Of course i could be wrong as i only
had a picture as a reference.

Salut/Hi Chris Blunt,

I'm very sorry, but I don't have a clue what it is!

No. I recognise all the items on the list you show, the first column are all
varieties of lentils, as are the first 5 items in the second column. Then
after besan/ground chick peas, you have 5 different kinds of nut, none of
which are the same as the photo. The last 6 are pretty well self
explanatory, one whole spice, some ground ones and salt. So none of these
correspond to what you show. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it was some
kind of snack, probably made from ground lentils and spices, deep fried. As
to how to use it? No idea at all, sorry.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried deep frying one and it did become
more brittle and edible. As for the taste - well, I don't think I'll
bother cooking the rest of them.

I did, but there was only a cashier on duty and she had no idea what
they were.

To me they look like Dhaal Pakora. My mother makes them out of ground
dhaal, chillies, corriander, onions and other spices. She deep fries
them before serving them. One thing that puzzles me if they are pakoras,
why are they packed in a plastic bag and left on the shelf? They will
taste awful like this. They should have been frozen.

They did taste awful when fried. Maybe that explains why. Perhaps I
should be thankful I didn't get sick on them.

Probably they are vadis of the kind that go into kadhi or some such. Vadis
are dry and hard and would soften with cooking in a fluidy dish.
