we are doing a day trip to westerly RI next sunday (wife's bday!). as a
child she used to go a beach there (some indian name i keep
forgetting). what places can you recommend for lunch and/or dinner? most
common cuisines are fine with seafood being a good choice. i have found
some web pages on the area but you can't judge by those so any reviews
or leads are welcome.

For very good upscale dining in a lively atmosphere (at least on the weekends)
you could go to the Watch Hill Inn...at Watch Hill, of all places.

If the conditions are right they open the large bay windows overlooking the harbor
and let the breeze into the dining room which is very nice touch.

Mary's Italian Restaurant (or maybe just Mary's Restaurant, depending on
which sign you're looking at), on Rt. 1 (at least the sign faces Rt. 1;
the restaurant is visible from there but it's actually on a nearly
parallel road a few yards up from the intersection. Assuming it's still
there, it meets your requirements to a T, and you can get an excellent
meal there.

found their website (watchhillinn.com) and their seaside grille sounds
perfect. the wife liked what we saw in the pictures and the menu. i will
make reservations for sure.

also the beach is misquamicut state beach and it is a favorite RI and CT
beach.

weather looks great for sunday, 70's and drier so we should have a great
time.

St Clair Annex, right there in the heart of Watch Hill, had absolutely
the best soft serve ice cream when I was there last summer. Also,
very tasty clam chowder (RI style). Very casual place, not sure if it
is what you are looking for, but quite good for what it is.

Olympia Tea Room across the street is a nice looking place, too, more
upscale, but I can't comment on the food quality.

called them up and they don't take reservations for 2 (only 4 or more)
but we shouldn't have a problem getting a table with a view (veranda or
indoors) at 6pm on sunday. early dinner since we will be fried from
beach time and cruising, shopping and such and a 2 hour ride home. we
will probably just find a lunch place by looking around. i can chowder
up both times and i like broth based chowders (i like cream ones too)
and i make mine without cream.

we checked out st. clair for lunch and skipped it as the wife wanted a
salad. we did go back there before dinner and i had a bowl of RI
chowder. very strongly flavored broth and it was slightly greasy (lotsa
butter and/or bacon) but i liked it. plenty of clams and unusually for
me it didn't need any extra pepper.

we had lunch at the seaside grille in the watch hill inn. the NE (white)
chowder was very good. thin broth with lotsa butter and good
flavor. decent amount of clams. the burger i had (10 oz. angus) with
gorgonzola and sauted red onions was tasty if overdone (i asked for
medium and it was medium well). the service was not great (teenage girls
who didn't give much of a damn) and the food pricy (my burger was $12
and it only came with chips!. wife's cobb salad was $14!!). so i am glad
we only had lunch there. the win here was the view. we had an table on
the veranda but it was fully shaded and a glorious view of the marina
and bay.

we ended up eating at olympia's for dinner. i had the baked seafood
casserole which was excellent. great butter seafood crumb stuffing over
large shrimps, a lobster claw, scallops and white fish. it came with a
1/2 ear of corn (so so) and roasted potatoes (too much starch so i
skipped them). wife had the pecan encrusted (pan?) grilled sole and she
loved it. we split a tomato and mozzarella salad. the service was much
more professional than at seaside grille. also the menu is much larger
than seaside so that is a win as well. plenty of nice looking choices.

we spent time on the misquamicut beach. we didn't even have to pay for
parking as we got there after 3pm and the toll guy just waved us
in. that was $14 in savings . later i took her onto the bumper cars at
a small amusement park down the shore road. hard to believe but she had
never been on them before! and so on her birthday (i won't say which!)
it was a small setup with modern cars (no power rod up to the roof) and
we were the only two riders so we atacked each other. she had a blast
with road rage and me.

all in all a very good day trip (long 2 hour ride each way).
