Default Restaurant week: Dalia's, Brookline, MA

Hi,

I had a restaurant week dinner tonight at Dalia's, in Washington
Square in Brookline. I have made a point of eating here in prior
Restaurant Weeks, because I think that this restaurant offers a
particularly good value (I'm not claiming that dinner for $33.08 is
cheap, just that it can be worth the money). I was pleased tonight
that the restaurant was notably more crowded than on my past visits,
even if it meant that the noise level was a bit higher than I liked
for the first half-hour or so of our dinner.

The menu featured 3 starters, 5 entrees, and 3 desserts. Full details
are available on-line, so I'll summarize our reactions. The salad of
prosciutto, watermelon, feta, and greens was exactly as described,
though not extraordinary. In contrast, the cold cucumber-apple soup
was spectacular, and reporters at the far end of the table claimed
that the fried polenta was also excellent.

We did not have all 5 of the entrees. The kebabs of beef with
couscous were excellent, as was the chicken in an amaretto sauce (what
an inspired idea!). The salmon was a competent execution, with lovely
roast potatoes.

Predictably, we had to take some of the desserts for the next day,
meaning that we took some slices of chocolate cake home. A bowl of
moscarpone cheese with blueberries and lemon curd, sampled at the
restaurant, was magnificent.

I might mention that the wine list is affordable, and the price per
glass on each wine (and all of the list is available by the glass) is
exactly one quarter of the price of a bottle. We had a French
syrah-grenache blend, and then I had a glass of cabernet sauvignon
with the kebabs.--Rob
