Default "Jersey Fresh" tomatoes?!?!?

Well, it certainly isn't coming out of my garden this year. In the 20+
years I have had a vegetable garden here in the Garden State, this is
the first one for which I have had utter disaster with my tomatoes.

There were at least 6 varieties planted and maybe 20 plants.

I am usually begging people to take tomatoes this time of year. Lousy
yields. And the corn didn't do so well, either.

Well, the herbs have come in nicely and the roses have been lovely, so
I cannot be too sad, except for the fact that I miss the dribble of
tomato juice down my chin.

I got a couple of ripe romas last week and today, the first
ripe round tomato. I have plenty of tomatoes, just none of
them are ripening yet.

I have seen Jersey fresh in the stores, though, Andy. Maybe, just
maybe I'll get to the farmer's market this Sunday and see what
they have in the way of tomatoes.

nancy,

Come to think of it, last year's New Jersey Tomato Festival was held in
August. This year's 3rd Annual is being held in mid September. I'm overly
concerned. The harvest is WAY late.

Sigh!

Andy, It's the heat, not the humidity! (chuckling)

If it's any consolation, the Oregon crop is twiddling and diddling the
summer away too. I have 5 tomato plants, planted in May - each
stunningly healthy and covered with green tomatoes. With the exception
of the sungold (cherry variety), which has yielded about 2 pints of
ripe fruit, I've had zip. By this time, we're usually in tomato heaven
and I'm wondering if these babies are ever going to ripen. It's as if
they've gone into some kind of suspended animation. If they all come
in at once I'm going to have to open a farm stand - but I 'd kill for a
nice drippy BLT right now.

For what it's worth Andy, the Long Island crop of tomatoes are JUST coming
in. I have seen Jersey Fresh tomatoes in the NYC markets just starting to
come in-way late this year. And the tomatoes are not particularly large or
very red. Seems some of the heirlooms are much better in terms of flavor-but
they are small as well.
I planted about 20 plants this year. The couple of 100degree days did in the
grape, cherry and yeallow pear tomatoes, the big boys 'popped' before they
got ripe. As for the rest of the garden, all the string beans were lost and
about 3/4 of the peppers. The only thing actually growing are the brussels
sprouts and onions.

Kswck,

Yew Nork City? My kinda town!

Around here, some of the tomato bins are labeled Jersey tomatoes, but
they're bogus!

So I sit here in silence and wait!
