Default Looking for a wine cooler

I'm looking for a wine cooler as a gift for my wife.
I know very little, other than that there seems to be a large spread
in both quality and price.

So:
Where around here is a place to buy a good cooler?
(not home depot)
what brands should I look for/avoid?

I'm looking for something in the 30-35 bottle range, free standing.

TIA

I have absolutely no idea if they do, but Modern Brewer on Mass Ave in
Cambridge has always been a source of good information for me. Give 'em
a call and see what they can tell you (and recognize tht you might need
to call back when a manager/owner is there, 'cause you never know who's
going to answer the phone). There are other homebrew places which might
have that kind of equipment and/or expertise as well - I think I was at
one on Woburn when I was looking at filtration devices, for instance.

i don't know the price or where to buy it but a stone wine cooler is a
great idea. it is a hollow cylinder of marble (ours is green) and you
refrigerate it for a while. later take it out and put the bottle in
it. the stone holds lots of cold and look great too.

i would check crate and barrel and similar store for this. i can't
imagine it would be out of your price range.

Uri,

I think he's asking about a refrigerant-based wine cellar, suitable for
long-term storage of numerous bottles, rather than a one-bottle chiller
that you use just before dinner.

Try Clarke in Milford (MA). http://www.clarkecorp.com/ 800-842-5275

They have Sub-Zero (e.g. http://www.clarkecorp.com/sub/400s/424fs.htm)
and Scotsman (http://www.clarkecorp.com/news/image...an%20specs.pdf)
The Sub-Zero 424fs has a 46-bottle capacity, the Scotsman 32.

Jarvis Appliances in Wellesley also carries Sub-Zero.

Unfortunately, this is an area of incredible mark-up for average-quality
appliances: The cheap stuff is cheap and the good stuff is very expensive.

We bought a Marvel under-the-counter refrigerator last year and payed
about 40% over our budget because it was the only one we could find that
we liked to some degree. Most of what we found we hated.

But I have to say I am happy with it, so I guess I would recommend
Marvel if it is within your budget. They make many different types
small refrigerators and wine-coolers.

I bought mine at Percy's in Worcester, but there are plenty of
websites out there that list them. Maybe you can find a better deal
if you shop around.
