I hate sites that require registration.

The problem with grilling -- the only problem, as I see it -- is absence
of drippings, hence lack of real gravy. Turkey needs gravy.

What about when people deep fry a turkey? You don't get gravy from it
then.. I've never tasted this, but hear it's good from everyone who has
tried it. It seems to be too much work dealing with a huge vat of oil.

When I've done it, it has been using the classic Southern method of
rounding up all your buddies and their turkeys, gathering at the old
gas station, and cooking your turkeys in the parking lot over a few
communal cookers, so that you don't each have to mess around with the
huge vat of hot oil.

That said, driving across town with a hot turkey ain't that fun, either...

It's obviously an outdoor event, and cleanup of the used oil must be kind of
a pain as well. Just doesn't seem worth all the effort to me.

Additionally, a lot of house fires have been started this way.

So what you're trying to say, Art, is that everybody who has not yet had
children should deep-fry their Thanksgiving turkeys and the ones who
survive should be allowed to breed? Sounds like a plan! And all that
used fryer oil can be processed for biodiesel for the SUVs that don't
explode during the experiment. I love it!

People deep fry candy bars too, but you're not about to see me doing it.

It's also rather risky. Most home cooks don't understand the
implications of boiling oil well enough to be attempting this.

Especially if you are boiling the oil. Deep frying doesn't (well,
shouldn't...) involve boiling oil. Virtually all cooking oil will
smoke and burn long before you get it to boil...

Deep-fried turkey is quite good (and not oily at all if done right).
I've done dozens, safely, but if you don't regularly deal with large
quantities of oil it's a bit of a logistical mess.

So you would put gravy on a candy bar if it wasn't deep fried?
