Hello there.
i have been using my starter for couple of months,when those strange
yellow spots was starting to show up .

what are they? should i worry about the starter?
its in good shape , always active after 8 hours from feeding (flour
\water 50\50) and its mange to rise any dough , so what is the
problam?
i thought maybe the flour was the issue, so i replaced it with
another. still. the same strange looking spots again.
please help, i am worry about my sweet little starter!

It looks like contamination of some kind from soomething. They seem
to acting like die particles. Personally I'd change my flour and see
what happened after a few good refreshments. By that I mean take a
teaspoon of your starter and add a cup of water and enough flour to
bake your batter let it peak then repeat. It should stop with
different flour. If it doesn't then it must be getting in from some
other source like the water or anything else you add. Try changing
one thing at a time until you stop getting the spots. Who knows what
the contamination is. What spoons do you use, could turmeric have got
into your flour or something you use?

I'm using a wooden spoon and a galss container.
i dont think turmeric involved in this session. :-) i wish.
do you think its risky to bake with those points on the starter?

Hi Eyal,

I've honestly got no idea. I've never seen it before but the way you
have that small spot and a bleeding out from it implies to me that
you have some specs of something dyeing the starter yellow. I would
be concerned about what it was. It could be totally harmless but who
knows? You say you've changed your flour. Did you change it to a
different brand from a different mill? Look at everything you're
using to see where it could be coming from. Personally I wouldn't use
the starter until I'd found the cause to be edible.

Personally I wouldn't, whatever happens it'll go in the oven.
Anyway probably it's some microorganism that manages not to be killed
by your starter, I'd try washing it as it's been said before, it
should get rid of it.

Thnak for you advices. I will try to feed my starter for couple of
cycles and see what will happen.
Hope its nothing too strong for my starter to compete with. ...

Hi Eyal,

Oh course, I don't know but the bleeding really does indicate some
kind of dyeing agent. A microbe wouldn't be so localised unless you'd
not stirred the starter for some time but then the only thing I can
imagine colouring it would be a mould. My money would be on some
mineral contamination of some kind.

Course, another good test would be to mix up exactly what you're
doing with your starter but just not add any of your starter, see
what happens, that should eliminate any microbes from the starter.

I had some spots on one starter and didn't really like the look of them
so I sat it off to the side and forgot about it.
