NATO takes over military reconstruction team in Afghanistan

KABUL, Jan. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- The North Atlantic Treaty Organization
(NATO) took over authority of a provincial reconstruction team (PRT)
in a northern Afghani city on Tuesday, marking a milestone in planned
expansion of civil-military activities in coming months, a US military
spokesman said here.
"The German-led PRT in Kunduz is the first in Afghanistan to operate
under NATO control," said Bryan Hilferty, spokesman of US-led
coalition forces, at a press briefing in Kabul.
PRT is a US-initiated program to help local security and
reconstruction efforts in Afghan provinces through deploying
small-sized civil-military teams, often with some 50 soldiers.
NATO has agreed to take over control of some PRTs after the United
Nations Security Council earlier in October authorized the alliance to
expand its peacekeeping operation beyond Kabul, the Afghan capital.
There are currently around eight PRTs across the war-battered country,
mostly run by the United States and its allies including Britain and
New Zealand.
