Default God Bless America

Where did that catchphrase start from?

At the end of the Saddam broadcast they said "God Bless America"

George W Bush even said it a few times in his speeches during the
war, and every president before him has used that phrase at some point
in time or another...

For a religious person, it's like bless this house or bless this crop.
Doesn't or shouldn't mean god help us feel good about what we just did. I
don't even see it as hypocritical from a "pagan" leader - they are saying
what some of the population would want, and the others should not care. How
about "Allah protect us" as a possibly useful catchcry?

Don't think its a catchphrase. Isn't it a line from the American National
Anthem?

You're right, it's an unofficial American anthem written in 1918 by Irving
Berlin as part of a stage production but not used, then re-written in 1938
by Berlin as a peace song just before the war. You would have heard the
tune, as I discovered I have when I looked it up.

**The US is the most Christian nation on Earth.

**Yep. If I was an American, I'd want to puke. I know I felt that way when I
read John Howard's Preamble to the Constitution. It was deeply offensive and embarressing.

**Despite being the most technologically advanced nation on Earth, the US is
one of the most superstitious. Religious beliefs run deep. Even their coins
are inscribed "In God We Trust". If I was an American I'd be deeply
embarressed. Dubya allegedly 'discovered God' few years ago, to coincide
with his political ambitions. A cynic might suggest that he 'discovered God'
in order to capture the far right, Christian lunatic vote. A cynic might
suggest that, but I wouldn't. Dubya is just about dumb enogh to actually
believe in the supernatural, just like the majority of Americans.

I think that the original history of America was the immigration of the
puritans from Europe from persecution. Hence they get festivities like
Thanksgiving Day etc. Also the seal of the USA is, "In God We Trust"

USA history has been deeply rooted with Christianity and certain scholars
actually believe that Early America would be the first Christian country.

Later in the years, secularism has setted in, things like banning prayers in
classrooms and other political correctness has also came in. In similar
words from the father of a child murdered in one of the school's massacre,
"The time when government had banned prayers in the class rooms, the classes
were once filled with prayer, but now they are filled with knives and guns"

In retrospect, USA has its roots in Christianity and that would be most
likely where the catch phrase "God Bless America" would have stemmed from.

Kindest regards
