Default Terry Hicks for Australian of the Year

With Steve Irwin all but stuffed as Australian of the Year due
to his unfitness as a father, I nominate Terry Hicks in his stead.

A man who embarked upon a tireless campaign for justice
for his son, David.

Justice denied him after a fawning John Howard and his Liberal
Party sycophants did a Pontius Pilate and gave the US
carte blanche to do with him as they will, irrespective of
International Law or the Geneva Convention.

In a scene reminiscent of Kafka's "The Trial" David Hicks has
been held in custody for over two years without charge, during
which time his father Terry, has travelled the world to plead the
plight of his son at great personal cost. Ensuring his son is not
forgotten, as was hoped for by the Australian Government.

My second nomination would be Andrew Wilke who sacrificed
his career to inform the Australian public of the distortions and
outright lies told by John Howard and the Liberal Party to
"justify" the illegal war against Iraq.

Serge.

Serge

David Hicks was a hired gun mercenary.

He took the risk and got caught.

Also under Australian law this is one of the few crimes under which the
commonwealth can strip you of your citizenship.

This guy is no hero in my view.

That's yet to be established. There's a presumption of innocence,
which although the kangaroo court set up to try him will ignore,
international jurisprudence won't!

Got caught doing what? Working for the legitimate government
of a sovereign state?

No law against that.

Australian citizenship isn't worth zip. Just ask the Australian
journalists murdered in East Timor, just ask Chambers and
Barlow, or for that matter just ask Hicks.

In spite of all their faults, the United States always looks after
their own. Unlike the Australian Government which treats its
citizens like shit.

I wasn't nominating him, I was nominating his father Terry.

Although, to be held for two years without charge, to endure
torture, to endure humiliation, to be treated like an animal, you
may be right. Perhaps we should have David Hicks as
Australian of the Year.

Presumption of innocence?

The guy was a hired thug working with a self declared repressive govt that
sponsored and allowed terrorists to reside and train in their country.

The fact that there is no bickering between the major powers over the need
to overthrow the Taliban speaks volumes.

David has now been given legal representation and will be allowed to return
to Australia to serve a custodial sentence -what more do you want?

In most conflicts mercenaries usually end up with a bullet in the head.

Do you seriously have kangaroo courts in Australia?

It has happened!
The most well known example was that of journalist Wilfred Burchett.
Burchett participated in the interroragation and torture of Australian POWs during the
Korean War.
He admitted it!
I believe he also had some Nth Vietnam involvement during that conflict.

Hicks was working for the Taliban.
The UN, repeat, the UN, were determined to remove the Taliban from power.
Australia participated in that action.
Hicks was fighting against Australia's interests.
Hicks was fighting against Australians.
Remove his Australian citizenship!
He is a traitor!
The death penalty still exists for traitor in Australia!

Serge wasn't nominating David Hicks for Australian of the year, he was
nominating Terry.
I think his point is a valid one:-

regardless of whether his son was guilty or not. Cant even say this until
there's been a fair trial.

Would he have to be found guilty in a court of law?

Or would a foreign military tribunal do?
