Why can't the government be for the people?
Democracy is not just an electoral system, and it's certainly not
binary. While there are plenty of people who would like it to be
otherwise, and while it falls short in many of the details, our system
of government is based on the fundamental premises that laws rule not
people, and that it's the citizens that have the ultimate authority to
hire/fire the lawmakers.
Additionally we can stand on the street and shout that any politician
is doing a lousy job, or we can publish a book on the topic.
Again, our system falls short in many of the details, but tell people
who will never get a vote, fear a government-sanctioned murder from
speaking their mind, and are subject to the whims of rulers whose mere
word is law; that we in Australia are nowhere near democracy.
