Villager accused of burning Islam's holy book shot dead in Pakistan
A gunman shot and killed a man in northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, a day after his family and
some residents accused him of burning Islam's holy book, police said.
The victim, a 30-year-old Muslim, was first stoned near a police station by several angry villagers
and then a gunman shot him dead at Cherat, about 25 kilometers (15 miles) east of Peshawar, the
capital of North West Frontier Province, said Abdul Razzaq, a local police official.
He said the incident occurred a day after the man's family and some residents told police that the
man had burned the Quran, Islam's holy book. "We registered a case against him Tuesday, but he was
shot dead today before we could arrest him," Razzaq said.
"Now we are trying to arrest those people who attacked or killed him."
Under Pakistan's harsh blasphemy laws, anyone who insults the Quran, Islam or its prophet Muhammad
can be punished by death. Muslims make up about 97 percent of Pakistan's 150 million population. The
rest are mostly Christian.

Jaipur, April 19: The RSS claimed on Tuesday that over 3,200 persons belonging to Chita-Mehrat
community reconverted to Hinduism on Monday in central Rajasthan in the presence of RSS chief K.S.
Sudarshan. These people had adopted Islamic traditions during the Muslim rule, according to Mr Jugal
Kishor, a senior VHP functionary.
The RSS function was organised at Beawar under Ajmer district. That area is known as Magra Merwara
and is dominated by Rawat community. Addressing the function, Mr Sudarshan urged RSS and Bajrang Dal
workers to encourage people who wanted to return to the Hindu fold. He appealed to all who had
converted to Islam or other religions to reconvert to Hindusim. BJP leaders and a Rajasthan minister
were also present at the function.
This belt is a centre of Hindu and Muslim organisations who have been engaged in such activities,
says Mr Ashok, a social worker at Beawar. "Over 70,000 people were reconverted to Hinduism in last
few years," claims Mr Kishor. The function was organised at Ashapurana Temple which was built by the
VHP. Ashapurna is a deity of the Chita-Mehrat and Rawat communities. "We have built over 40 temples
in the region and our target is to construct 300 temples," Mr Kishor said. The VHP runs several
projects and 125 schools in the area.
"These people were Hindus and descendants of Hindu king Prithiviraj Chauhan and still practice Hindu
traditions," claims Mr Kishor. "There are a dozen Muslim outfits active in the area and they try to
win over innocent people by using money power to follow Islamic traditions.
They pay for sporting a beard or wearing an Islamic cap, they even pay if you perform namaz," he
claimed. However, Muslim organisations have refuted these charges.
Jamaite-Islamiís Rajasthan unit chief Salim Engineer said over four lakh Muslims in the Magra
Merwara region are living under pressure.
"It is false propaganda by the RSS. If anything is found wrong on the part of Muslim organisations,
there is law, they can take action," he added.
"What is wrong with madarsas. When there are no government schools, where will poor students go," he
said. The RSS is trying to malign our image, Mr Engineer said.
Beawar resident Bhima Kathat blamed both the groups for exploiting the poor on the pretext of
religion. Meethu Khan in Beawar said 90 per cent of his community members practice Islam and a small
group follows Hindu traditions. There could be many examples of people with Hindu names who practice
Islam. Sanjay Khan, of Neem Garh village, said most of his community members follow Islamic
Ajmer PUCL chief D.L. Tripathi questions the rationale behind this conversion. He claimed that these
people were discarded and humiliated on the basis of their caste. "First, you stop discrimination
and then there would not be any problem," he said.
During the previous BJP rule in Rajasthan, a big statue of Praithiviraj Chauhan was erected in Ajmer
aimed to revive glory of Hindutva among Rawats. Chita-Mehratís BJP MP from Ajmer Rasa Singh is also
a Rawat and was also present in the Beawar function. The belt is surrounded by small mountains and
poverty is a big problem for the region. But, no one is interested in upliftment of poor people.
According to the VHP, Muslim rulers, after the defeat of Prithiviraj Chauhan unleashed a reign of
terror among his caste brethren and forced them to adopt Islamic traditions. His descendants are
divided into four sections ó Chita, Mehrat, Kathat and Rawats. Rawats predominately enjoy their
Hindu status. The RSS chief also urged people to have social relationships with those who returned
to the Hindu fold.
Last week, dalit leader Udit Raj in Rajasthan appealed to the dalits to embrace Buddhism. The
Rajasthan government, last month announced that it will bring in an anti-conversion law.

Pakistan mob kills 'blasphemer'
A mob of angry villagers in Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province has
killed a man accused of blasphemy, police say.
Aasheq Nabi was shot dead in Nowshera district, 30km (18 miles) from
Peshawar, after reports he had burnt a copy of the Koran - Islam's holy
News of the alleged desecration spread rapidly, bringing people onto
the streets and calls for his arrest.
Correspondents say it is the first time in several years that a
blasphemy case in Pakistan has involved mob violence.
Police said on Wednesday they had raided Mr Nabi's house in the Pabbi
area, but the 400-strong mob found him first.
Today, a mob spotted him and shot him dead
Nowshera police chief
Witnesses say he was chased through fields and sought refuge up a tree
before being shot dead by someone in the crowd.
Police said Mr Nabi, who was in his 40s, had been in hiding since
"We registered a case against him on Tuesday, but he was shot dead
today before we could arrest him," local police official Abdul Razzaq
told the Associated Press.
He said Mr Nabi's family had been among those who reported him to
Police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the lynching.
Under Pakistani law, the death penalty is mandatory for anyone
convicted of blasphemy.
Human rights activists describe the law as deeply flawed.
They allege that since coming into force, it has been used to settle
personal scores and to target minorities.
Over the last 15 years or so, dozens of Pakistanis - including
Christians, Muslims and Qadianis (a sect declared non-Muslim under
Pakistan's constitution) - have been charged with blasphemy.
In 1994, religious extremists shot dead a Christian, Manzur Masih, who
was accused of blasphemy but was acquitted by the Lahore High Court. He
died on the spot and two of his co-accused - also acquitted by the
court - were seriously injured.
Three years later, Arif Iqbal Bhatti, the judge who had acquitted
Manzur and his co-accused, was also shot dead.
In 1998, a Pakistani bishop, John Joseph, committed suicide in protest
against the laws.
