Facts about terrorist Islam and Muslims
http://www.flex.com/~jai/satyamevajayate The editorial begins: Get the culprits Editorial The Pioneer Monday, March 8, 2004 The murderous attack on Prof Humayun Azad, celebrated Bangladeshi writer, poet, and head of Dhaka University's Bangla department, on February 27, and the events following, have once again underlined the threat that fundamentalist Islamist elements have come to pose to the values of Bangladesh's freedom struggle-secularism, democracy and modernism-and those committed to these. If the attack, which severely injured Prof Azad, was a dastardly act in itself, the twist which none other than Bangladesh's Prime Minister, Begum Khaleda Zia, had tried to give it was both sinister and cynical. She alleged at a public meeting on February 28, the day a general strike had been called by the Awami League, that the latter had engineered the attack to exploit it to make the strike a success. The allegation, which was reminiscent of Hitler's attribution of the Reichstag fire in 1933 to the Communists and Socialists, was followed, within an hour of the crime, by the arrest of Abbas, a leader of the Awami League's student organisation, the Chhatra League. The question arises as to how the Bangladeshi police, the inefficiency of which was thoroughly exposed when, in October, 2002, the Bangladesh Army had to launch "Operation Cleanheart" to curb the spiralling crime rate, could so soon zero in on Abbas, who is also joint secretary of Rahman Hall in the Dhaka University hostel, as a suspect. Or was his arrest planned along with the attempt to murder Prof Azad, by elements close to the incumbent regime? Not surprisingly, many in Bangladesh tend to believe former Prime Minister and Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina's claim that Begum Zia's allegation represents a clumsy attempt to divert attention from the fact that the fundamentalist Islamist forces, associated with the alliance, Islami Oikya Jote, which is a partner in her Government, were behind the crime. They had been threatening him ever since the publication of his novel Pak Sar Zamin Sad Bad, which dwells on the horrific atrocities committed by Pakistani troops during Bangladesh's liberation struggle in 1971, in the Id issue of a popular Bengali daily. Besides, this is not the first time these elements have tried to murder an intellectual like Prof Azad who has been trying to keep alive the secular, liberal and democratic traditions of the liberation struggle. In October, 1999, the Harkat-ul-Jihad-e-Islami, a terrorist militia allied with the Jamaat-e-Islami, had tried to murder the country's most celebrated poet, Mr Shamsur Rahman. The interrogations that had followed the arrest of 10 of its activists and the closure of its office at the Dhaka suburb of Khilgaon, had unravelled a plot to kill 28 of Bangladesh's leading intellectuals including the author, Taslima Nasreen. Begum Zia, who has assured Prof Azad's family security and has promised to send him abroad for treatment, if necessary, should know that such moves will not absolve her Government of blame unless it arrests those really behind the attack and ensures their conviction. Nothing short of it will do.
