Gunmen kill custodian of mosque in Karachi
KARACHI: Two attackers riding on a motorcycle fatally shot a man outside a
mosque in southern Pakistan before fleeing, police said yesterday.
It was not immediately clear who was behind the killing of Mangal Nawaz, the
custodian of a Shi'ite mosque in Karachi, the capital of southern Sindh
province, said Asif Ijaz, a city police officer.
Ijaz said the man was apparently not the victim of sectarian violence, but
police are still investigating.
Meanwhile, President Pervez Musharraf urged Pakistanis to shun sectarianism
and foster unity as they celebrated Eid Al Fitr under tight security
following sectarian violence that has claimed 171 lives this year, state
media reported.
In line with Islam's teachings, "we should endeavour to foster mutual
brotherhood, unity and love so that we may get rid of sectarianism,
extremism and terrorism and move forward on the path of progress and
prosperity," Musharraf said.
"That indeed is the right path which can lead the Muslims today to regain
their past glory," he said in an Eid message carried by the Associated Press
of Pakistan.
Extra troops and police were called in to boost security as Pakistanis
celebrated Eid Al Fitr.
"We have provided metal detectors to the police and installed closed-circuit
television cameras at various public and worship places," the mayor of the
eastern city of Lahore, Mian Amir Mehmood, said.
Worshippers congregated in large gatherings across the country and Muslim
scholars prayed for the progress and prosperity of Pakistan, national
television said.
