Rebels blow up oil well in Assam
GUWAHATI (India), Nov 26:-A powerful Indian separatist rebel group claimed
responsibility Friday for blowing up an oil well and injuring at least five
soldiers in the restive northeast, reports AFP.
A spokesman for the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) told
reporters the blasts Thursday were in response to a "lack of positive response
from the Indian government" to their offer of peace talks.
The blasts came soon after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rejected the group's
demand for independence for oil and tea-rich Assam state, saying it was an
"integral part" of India but that he was open to discussion of other issues.
The rebels blew up an injection well belonging to India's state-owned Oil India
Ltd. in the Lankachi area in the east of the state. In another incident they
injured at least five soldiers in a grenade attack on an army vehicle.
They also threw a grenade at a police station but there were no casualties. An
Oil India spokesman said crude supply was not affected. The blasts preceded
ULFA's annual protest day Sunday that marks the 10th anniversary of a huge army
crackdown against its forces.
"We've put extra troops around vital installations, especially in areas through
which oil pipelines pass," said state Inspector General of Police Khagen
Sharma.
ULFA rebels often attack oil installations in Assam, which is the source of
some 15 per cent of India's onshore crude oil production or about five million
tonnes annually, as well as striking government and military targets.
ULFA, which took up arms for an independent homeland in 1979, has demanded
independence be the core issue in any peace talks. Singh ruled out independence
during his trip to Assam that ended Monday but said New Delhi's door was
"always open for negotiation" with any group shunning violence.
Last month Assam was shaken by a spate of attacks that killed 53 people and
injured 150. Both ULFA and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland, which
wants a separate Bodo tribal homeland, claimed responsibility.
Militant outfits in the region accuse New Delhi of plundering its resources
while neglecting its development.
India's northeast is a cauldron of rebel outfits with causes ranging from
autonomy to independence. Over 50,000 people have lost their lives to
insurgency in the northeast since India's independence from Britain in 1947.

News Report

Skeleton of a young man was recovered from a water tank in an
under-construction market at Mirpur section-10 on Friday night, 36 days
after he had been missing.

The victim was identified as Sohag alias Nawshad (18), a suspected mugger
and son of one Sona Miah, a slum-dweller of Mirpur area.

Police said suspected muggers Pappu, Shahin, Sayeed and Amir Ali, as a
sequel to old enmity over sharing hijacked money stabbed their
accomplice Sohag to death on the rooftop of an under-construction market
"New Society Market" located at Mirpur-10 on October 22 night.

Later, the body was thrown into an abandoned water tank of the
under-construction market. Since then Sohag''s relatives made frantic search
for Sohag. But they failed to trace his whereabouts. Finally, the family
members went to Pallabi police and sought their help. Shortly after getting
the complaint, Pallabi police arrested Bhulu, one of the close accomplices
of Sohag.

Later, as per his statement, police recovered the skeleton of the victim
from the abandoned water tank. The arrested Bhulu claimed himself to be
innocent. "Pappu, Amir Ali, Sayeed and Shahin as a sequel to old enmity over
sharing looted money killed Sohag" Bhulu added.

Police said that these men including Sohag were members of an organised gang
of muggers. They used to sleep at the second floor of the under-construction
market, police said.

In another incident, a suspected mugger was caught red handed and killed in
mob beating in the city's Demra area on Saturday.

The victim was identified as Raju (25), son of Joynal Abedin, resident of
East Dhania under Demra police station.

Police said local people caught Raju red handed while he along with others
tried to snatch valuables from a pedestrian in Mirhajirbagh area under the
same police station at about 1-15 pm. The angry mob beat him up leaving him
critically injured. He was taken immediately to DMCH where the attending
doctors declared him dead.
Meanwhile, a CNG-driver Abu Sayeed (28) who was stabbed seriously by a gang
of terrorists at Mirpur-14 on Monday last, suc***bed to his injuries at
Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the early hours of Saturday.
Hospital sources said two local terrorists Tipu and Sentu, snatching a
scissor from a local tailoring shop at Goyalbari area under Mirpur-14 hit
the victim on the chest and belly with the scissor leaving him critically
injured. He was admitted to DMCH where he breathed his last at about 4 am.
The cause of the attack could not be known immediately. Soon after the
incident, police arrested Mukul, owner of the tailoring shop in this
connection.
Meanwhile, an incident of daring robbery took place at a residence in the
city's Rupnagar area in the early hours of Saturday. The robbers looted
cash, gold ornaments, camera and other valuables worth about Taka three lakh
from the house.

Police said a gang of dacoits numbering five to six, equipped with firearms
entered the house at Road No-12, house-6 under Pallabi police station around
3 am by breaking grill of the window. Entering the house, the gangsters held
the inmates hostage and looted Tk 75,000 in cash, 20 tolas of gold ornaments
and other valuables at gunpoint. Immediately, they left the house with no
resistance, sources said.

Meanwhile, armed extortionists, failing to realise toll, shot at a
contractor at Hatirpool Bazar in Dhanmondi on Saturday morning. The
bullet-hit contractor Saifullah Suman (30) is under-going treatment at DMCH.

Police sources said a group of extortionists, led by SA Monir, demanded Taka
five lakh as toll from Saifullah. As he did not meet their demand, the
hooligans shot at him thrice and left the scene.
