Default High Marks for Lingle

This is probably going to get someone excited, but recently the Maui News
had an article that asked our Maui State representatives to rate Lingle's
term in office so far. Those who responded, both democrats and republicans,
gave Lingle high marks. I think the lowest grade was a B- from Souki.

I'm not surprise. She still has many friends on Maui
where she has served as mayor. Criticism of her is
tempered by the concern of getting re-elected.
Obviously, Souki, who is a Democrat, is pretty
confident of re-election in giving her a mediocre
rating.

The referenced article can be found here:

http://www.mauinews.com/news/story/124202003_new02governor1204.asp

Excerpt:

"Lingle received straight As from two Republicans, West Maui Rep. Brian
Blundell and South Maui Rep. Chris Halford.

But she also received an A from East Maui Sen. Kalani English, who's as
Democratic as they come, and a B-plus from West Maui Sen. Roz Baker,
also a Democrat, who said she almost went with an A-minus.

The worst grade from the half-dozen legislators contacted in a straw
poll in the last couple of days came from crusty legislative veteran Joe
Souki, a staunch old-school Democrat...."

Note that the lowest grades also came from two people
with a lot of experience-- Roz Baker, and Souki.

That is an interesting comment. How secure are seats in Hawaii. We
know
that our Congress critters almost never lose a re-election bid. Does
the
same thing happen in Hawaii, i.e. our legislature almost never fail to
get
re-elected?

Yep, but if we take your spin on how Lingle is doing, and compare that
to
what these representatives are saying, one could say there is a
disconnect.
And while these democrats have lots of experience, that is also
correct, but
it is also correct that they gave Lingle very good marks.

CYA is the rule of the game. There aren't too many
candid office holders. Unless they're well qualified,
they don't stay in office too long.

It depends on what you mean by "very good". I don't
think they feel that way. By not giving her "the best"
grade, they are saying she is "not the best", OR "not
very good". I'd peg this as "mediocre".
