Default KSSK Apology

Since I used to listen frequently to Perry and Price on
the Hanohano Room shows, this has been an interesting
story. Also, I like to read Price's column in the
Midweek. I'm surprised we agree on so many things-- but
not all. I would agree that an apology has been due,
and am glad that Price has realised it too. Just wonder
how this will play out.

Here's a link to the most recent Star-Bulletin story.
Now, Senate leader Hanabusa has made a statement
defending Sen. Hooser.

The comment that all of this is about was, "In a contentious on-air
interview Friday, Price asked Hooser if he had blue eyes and was born
on the
mainland, while making the point that "local people" are suspicious when
such people say they are speaking "honestly."

What in the question is not correct? The part that "local people" are
suspicious when such people say they are speaking "honestly" (meaning
people
from the mainland)? Does the guy have "blue eyes"? Is he from the
"mainland"? What does he have to apologize for?

It's a prejudgement that Hooser is not telling the
truth. Need I bring up the word "haole"? The whole
thing is uncalled for. Price just got carried away with
his own feelings. It's very local of him, but to his
credit, Price knows that he can do better. =========

Larry Price is not the brightest bulb. At one time he did the sports
report for one of the local TV stations. He had trouble with the cue
cards. He could read them, just didn't know what they meant. For
example: "...and in the Sugar Bowl, Tenns beat AF 34-13." Not
"Tennessee beat Air Force", but "Tenns beat AF"! This from a former
football player, assistant coach and eventual UH head coach. Also
former Army veteran, who you would think should know what AF stands for.

His history of being in the center of the storm of the "locals vs.
haoles" issue dates way back to his days as head coach at UH when a
number of haole players, quarterback Casey Ortiz being the most
prominent, left the team claiming that theywere subjected to racial
prejudice from the local players. One of the implications was that the
coaching staff did nothing to discourage such attitudes.

I listen to P&P every day and have always enjoyed them and did not
hear Price's faux pas. I do believe that Price's father is from
Tennessee or someplace like that. Also despite what may be thought,
Price does have a PHD from UH in some sort of athletic course. I think
he might have dyslexic speech or something along those lines. He is
Mr. Malaprop and it is usually amusing to me. I count his mis-
pronunciations for the half hour that I listen to their morning show.
Entertainment and news.

I do hate that haole thing, because it is a real racist ugly and
stupid slur. It is subliminally continued in many areas- e.g. Akaka
Bill, Kamehameha school policy etc. As citizens of the Hawaiian
Kingdom on both sides, I know I am far more local than any one other
than a Hawaiian. It is true and one of my children does indeed have
blue eyes.

It's not a malapropism. I notice that many of the local
potugees seem to dress up their pidgin to make it more
colorful (perhaps that's why they make great radio
announcers and perhaps it's a cultural heritage?)

Yes... unfortunately, racism is alive and practiced
from all sides of our melting pot society. But the rate
of intermarriage is swamping that out. Perhaps one of
my future great grand-children will also have blue
eyes. It's like that with cousins now. So I don't think
that it will take too long.
