Your research is flawed..... PBS and NPR/HPR are free and accessable
here
in Puna without having to
buy into cable. Location will be the dominant quest tho.

There is a Public Radio out of Hilo KANO 91.1 I would think you would
not need any special receiver to get it in Puna. Try look at the NPR
site.

WE get our Public Radio, here in S. Kona from Maui w/o any tv
hook-up. We did buy a good radio a "SANGEAN" a CC radio. Don't ask
me what that CC radio does <g> but it was recommended by a newsgroup
(alt.home.repiar) person about 2 years ago and it gets NPR and all
Oahu stations.

TV I do not know. We have a dish and it does everything.

Good luck.

You can get one of the two NPR local feeds, which I believe is the mainly
classical music channel, KHPR. They are working on getting the news feed
channel, KIPO, up and running on the neighbor islands. With a broadband
connection, you can listen to them over the 'net, as well.

You should be able to get the local broadcast stations, which have
"repeaters" based in Hilo, via OTA antenna, for the FOX, ABC, NBC, CBS and
PBS affiliates, and the other local terrestrial stations. As I understand,
the local ABC affiliate, KITV, also has a HD transmitter in Hilo. Oceanic
also offers its ****og service for better reception and more basic cable
stations.

KHPR 88.1 FM serves Honolulu/Oahu to Maui and can be heard on parts of
the Big Island. However they do have a translator station on Maui, KKUA
90.7 FM which simulcasts KHPR. That signal is passed to KANO 91.1 FM in
Hilo which should cover most of Hilo/East to South Big Island until
probably Volcano after which the island slopes down and you'll probably
get a degradation of signal....

The Maui signal is very strong in nearly all points on South Kona, North
Kona, Kohala, parts of Kamuela and near Honokaa until about Laupahoehoe.

And while a Sangean radio is very good, I can catch these stations in a
car when I am on the Big Island and through a regular run of the mill portable radio.

CC more than likely stands for the C. Crane company which sells the
Sangean radios. They are heavily advertised on the "Coast to Coast AM"
talk radio show with George Noory/Art Bell nation wide.

Thanks Mel. We actually got the CC radio to get Perry and Price
better in the early am. It seems to have done the trick as far as
P&P. You a re correct, we get NPR pretty well in the car except around
certain corners. Thanks for the Sangean explanation. Appreciate it.

Negative. Others have pointed out KANO; living in Hilo I can attest
that it comes in well (in the car) south to near Volcano, east at least
as far as Pahoa, and north to around Laupahoehoe.

Um... I think PBS Hawaii is on broadcast channel 4. We have a corrugated
iron roof on our plantation house which apparently ruins reception so
we did wind up getting cable for it.

Oh, and at least here in town there's a "more basic than basic" package
for $10 or less that gets you the broadcast channels and a few others.

Hello and thanks to all who responded. Regarding the "flawed
research," I originally tried TVguide.com and Zap2It with Hilo's zip
code and they only showed 1 channel. After 6 or 7 tries (after I made
a fool of myself on the original post)..I finally got tv guide to show
the complete line-up. As for KANO radio, it doesn't carry much in the
way of "extra" programming -just the basics: All Things Considered
etc. i guess I'm a bit spoiled. If they bring a repeater over for the
Honolulu staion, that would be great. And yesterday I (amazingly) got
my antique computer to run RealPlayer 8 so I can listen to radio
staions all over the friggin' universe! Sometimes the audio sounds
like AM radio, but its still really cool. But then the issue becomes
-will I end up living off the telephone grid?

Another question: do many of the developments around the Big Island
have access to cable? How about HPP?

Thanks again.

KHET 11 (PBS - Honolulu)

KMEB 10 (PBS - Maui); can be viewed Maui county, northern & western
parts of Big Island.

KO4FE 4 (PBS - Hilo); Hilo

PBS-Hawaii is available on Oceanic Cable; they also have a digital
channel for PBS Kids full time.

KANO FM has been up and running in Hilo for several years now. Great for
classical music, specialty programming and All Things Considered....

HPP only has cable access for less than half the park as can be seen on
this
map http://www.hawaiianparadisepark.org/map3.html I'm not certain of
the
cutoff street but I believe it's 20th street being about the farthest
off
the main road you can get cable.... Again costs come into play but me
thinks the cable folks may have shot themselves in the foot since the
dish
took over. Like others said the price can't be beat but then again
your off
the Road Runner scheme of things..... Guess you could subscribe to
satellite too for your internet needs.....
