Default Recycling in Mililani-- expt going well

In Today's Star-Bulleting,

http://starbulletin.com/2003/12/05/news/story12.html

Looks like this experiment is a success in the first
month. That's rare, but maybe we are just ready for
this type of program.

Now this makes sense. Though I still would like to know what is going to
happen to the stuff that is not green waste.

It will either be purchased by a recycling company or a recycling
company will be paid to take it; which will most likely be off island
(Except maybe for the glass?)

Cheers,

Ned

Neither. I think the city program creates mulch and
compost by chopping it up and putting it into piles.
The public is invited to pick up as much as it likes
for their yards and gardens. For example, my aunt uses
a lot of this on her garden plot on city property in
Wahiawa.

Jerry:

I tralked to the director of the program...

What is being done with the collected material?

"Green waste is delivered to the Hawaiian Earth Product composting
facility in
Campbell Industrial Park. It is ground and put in windrows for
composting. The Menehune Magic mulch and compost product line can
found in all local garden
shops. Free mulch is available at a number of locations around the
island.
Wahiawa Community Gardens is the site closest to Mililani.

The mixed recyclables (aluminum, glass, plastic, newspaper, cardboard)
is
delivered to Island Recycling on Sand Island, where it is sorted,
compacted,
baled and shipped to market.

When is the first shipment going to leave the Island?

I'm sure some of the material has already been
shipped. Island Recycling has been collecting and marketing these
materials for many years."

I hope that puts you mind at ease.

Cheers,

Ned

Alright Jerry, you figured it out. All of the recyclables collected
are being given to all of the opala employees with the instructions to
take them home and put them in their craw spaces, under beds, and in
the back of their closets; when they run out of room the airport
screeners will place soda cans and old newspapers inside all departing
tourist's luggage. There are also negotiations with the construction
companies to allow some of the material to fill the empty space in
stud walls before the wallboard is hung. I feel so much better now
that the secret recycling conspiracy has been disclosed Ö I can
finally sleep at night.

Cheers,

Ned

Thanks for the information. Do they mention where the "market" is, i.e.
where are the bottles shipped to.
