It must be at least 50 years ago that television first came to Hawaii,
I recall as a 12 year old standing outside a shop in Kailua with a
group of people all staring thru the window at it. for some reason
December first 1953 rings a bell for me as the date the first
transmission took place.

I remember the first time I saw Color TV was an episode of the
flinstones.... I thought my mother had painted the screen.

I remember when my dad bought our color t.v. Of course he kept that
in his room while the living room had the B&W b/c my grandmother's
eyes hurt.

Speaking of, is Molokai the only place where you catch different
stations depending on the side of the island you're on?

Bought my first color TV (9"?) A Singer, from Singer Sewing Machine
Co. specifically to watch Apollo 11 launch in July '69 while living in
Palolo. Later learned the tv was made by Panasonic.
My father bought our first tv in 1949 in Ft. Worth Tx. Remember the
Indian head test pattern?
Have 4 color tv's and 5 computers in my house now. Ho, da progress!

Satellites and cable probably changed things, but if I recall correctly,
the people in Hana were among the last to get TV (which made them
perfect candidates for a study on how TV affects kids), but they were
only able to get one channel.

If you are referring to over the air broadcast signals, Molokai would
not be the only island. On the Big Island, most people on the west,
north and part of the Hamakua Coast catch TV relay stations from Maui.

For example, Channel 2 Oahu is Channel 7 Maui - parts of Big Island.

However in Hilo and most of the southeastern part of the island, Channel
2 is on Channel 11. There are probably some UHF translator signals to
take care of some of the more remote signal pockets.

I remember when I was living on the North Shore of Oahu, over the air
signals were receivable also from the Maui relay transmitter. The main
TV channels for Honolulu are mostly receivable in urban Honolulu, west
and central areas.. of course signal strength depends largely on where
you are located... valleys, mountains, condo high rises is known to
degrade a lot of over the air signals in Honolulu/Oahu... hence the
early popularity of cable TV on Oahu... it solved most of the signal
problems.

Wow, didn't realize that the Big Island had that too. My co-worker
never said anything, but then again she is from Hilo.

Waaaay back when...when I was growing up in Ho'olehua, we used to get
the Honolulu stations; 2, 4 and 9. 13 was kind of 'bus up...not to
clear. Ah...Lucky's Luau, Wayne Collins who memorized the news, Kini
Popo and his chimp...Sheesh, I feel old.

When I moved to the suburbs; Kamiloloa just outside Kaunakakai,
we got the Maui channels, 3, 7 and 12. When the Kikaida craze hit in
the early 70's, my daughter just had to be able to watch, so me and a
friend planted a big old telephone pole in my back yard and I attached
the antenna to it. Wallah! I got 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, AND 13...the Kikaida
channel. But you had to use the "fine-tune" dial. Hehe.

Now it's like a couple hundred channels...whew!
