Info on net is security risk, Kalam to agencies
PTI The Free Press Journal Friday, June 27, 2003 Udhampur, Jammu - Advising the security forces and law and order agencies not to use information on internet, President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam said on Thursday that such a course would prove detrimental to the national security and suggested that the country must develop its own operational system, and software, reports PTI "Security forces and law and order agencies must have their own operational system instead of the internet as certain information, if accessed through internet and commercially available operational systems, would prove detrimental to national security," he said after presenting colours to Jammu and Kashmir police at Sher-I- Kashmir police academy here. "We must develop operation system and software for our own national security because there are chips which have invisible data inside and these can be used for national security matters", he said. "India should make efforts to have its own operational system which can prove better for the efficiency of the security forces during operations in the country," he Kalam, who is on his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir after becoming the President. Kalam who also visited Vishno Devi Shrine suggested that additional technologies be inducted into state police and other security forces like hitech computers and micro processors with faster chips, saying these can become important modules for the forces during operations. He also stressed the need for co-ordination between police of different states and security forces through these technologies for better efficiency. Meanwhi8le, preparations are on in full swing at Government College for Women in Srinagar as it readies to receive President Kalam, who will become the eight head of state to visit the institute. "Kalam will be the eighth President to visit our college established 53 years ago," Principal Nusrat Andrabi told PTI. Presidents Rajendra Prasad, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, Zakir Hussain, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, V. V. Giri, Zail Singh and R. Venkatraman have already graced the college", she said. Andrabi said Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi had also visited the college as prime ministers. She said, Kalam would spend 20 minutes on Saturday interacting with over 1,200 students of the college. Asked if she had put a gag on fielding political questions to the president, Andrabi said, "No, we have not done any such thing., But we have suggested to the students to ask only relevant question which will increase knowledge base."
