PJA Starts Kurdish language courses in Armenia
21/08/2003 KurdishMedia.com (Translated) Yerevan (MHA) - The Free Womens Party (PJA) has started literacy courses in the Latin alphabet in Kurdish villages in Armenia, where the Cyrillic alphabet is dominant. In the courses, which are attracting great interest from both young and old, children are also taught about Kurdish heroes, beliefs, stories, songs, and cities. A new development has thus come about in terms of Kurdish education in Armenia. Heretofore, in settlement areas with substantial Kurdish populations, education in Kurdish has been officially provided in state schools for one hour a week. Due to the lack of materials in the schools, however, and the fact that this education has been conducted with the Cyrillic alphabet, this has been insufficient. Thus in order for the Kurdish language to be taught more effectively and to ensure that all Kurdish children in Armenia are able to get language instruction, the PJA has begun Kurdish language courses. In these language courses, the Kurdish language is taught in the Latin alphabet and, by being helped to comprehend the importance of the Kurdish language, the children are helped to develop in this regard. PJA officials in Armenia have said that they plan to make the language courses more comprehensive as time goes on, and to include the lessons in classes in state schools as well. Siloye Hemid, who sends his children to the language classes, said that Kurdish language instruction has to date been officially provided in some villages in Armenia, but that only a very small portion of the Kurdish children have benefited from this.
