Default BBC forced into embarassing U-Turn regarding SF coverage.

Sinn Féin has welcomed the decision of the BBC to modify its position
relating to election coverage in the light of a Sinn Féin court challenge.

On Wednesday, Sinn Féin launched High Court proceedings in Belfast
challenging the manner in which the BBC were covering the Assembly election
campaign.

South Belfast Sinn Féin Representative Alex Maskey said: ``It was clear that
the guidelines they were using discriminated against the republican
electorate.

``Yesterday the judge told the BBC to give their position mature reflection
overnight. This morning they returned to the court and agreed to modify
their position regarding election coverage.

``In light of this the case against the BBC would not proceed any further.
However we will continue to monitor election coverage closely during the
campaign and we will not hesitate to challenge overt discrimination again.''

Now THAT is what they should be doing Ray. There's TONS of stuff they could
be at to show up the rank discrimination of unionism here. Didn't think I'd
be able to say it - but bloody well done Sinn Fein!

A certain Nik, of soc.culture.irish "fame", writes :

I bet you haven't a clue what the ruling (made by a British court) was
about. I'm only saying that because I don't know myself - it hasn't
appeared on any of the main news channels here.

The ruling was that the BBC were to reflect on their behaviour and
they said they would!

No wonder they didn't report it!

I do not know the details beyond the fact that the denial of TV time
for the Stormont elections that had been Sinn Fein's right was to be
denied and now won't be.

Thats good enough for me to be happy...

Ok. I'm sure you'll make a comment should you learn more about that.

Brendan, the archiving directive needs to be on the very top line of the
message body (which I think you may be doing), and there should be a space
after the colon, otherwise it won't work.
X-No-Archive: yes
Ask Conor Martin O'Brien for details.

The judge said that the BBC had not breached the guidelines and refused
leave for Sinn Féin to ask for a judicial review of election coverage. The
ruling should appear on the Court Service website in a few days.

Another fine example of Sinn Féin/IRA getting their spun version of events
in first, and to maximum effect.

O'Brien uses Forte Agent which can do this automatically

IN earlier versions of Outlook Express anyway, after entering the
reply choose [View] then [Full Headers]
In the Distribution or the Keyword field, type in "World", hit Enter
and on the resulting new line, type in "X-No-Archive: Yes"
