Key Dates in Ex-Priest Geoghan's Case

Saturday August 23, 2003 11:39 PM

By The Associated Press

Some key dates involving former priest John Geoghan, who became a
central figure in the *** abuse scandal in the Roman Catholic church:

1962 - Geoghan ordained as a priest.

1962-1995 - Geoghan ***ually abuses approximately 130 people, mostly
grammar school boys, according to the alleged victims. Church
officials order him to get treatment or transfer him, but keep him on
as a priest.

1998 - Geoghan ousted as priest after the church reportedly pays
millions of dollars to settle *** abuse claims.

1999 - Geoghan indicted on child **** charges.

Jan. 9, 2002 - Former Cardinal Bernard Law acknowledges he moved
Geoghan from parish to parish despite evidence the priest had molested
children. Law apologizes to Geoghan's victims and promises to bar any
abuser from ministry.

Jan. 18, 2002 - Geoghan convicted of indecent assault and battery for
improperly touching a 10-year-old boy at a swimming pool a decade ago.
He is later sentenced to nine to 10 years in prison.

Jan. 24, 2002 - Do***ents released in civil lawsuits provide evidence
archdiocesan officials protected Geoghan, instead of children.

May 8, 2002 - Cardinal Law begins depositions in civil cases related
to Geoghan.

Sept. 19, 2002 - Boston Archdiocese settles with 86 Geoghan victims
for $10 million, after pulling out of an earlier settlement of about
$30 million.

Dec. 13, 2002 - Under fire for mishandling abuse cases, Law resigns.

Aug. 23 - Geoghan dies after an attack by another inmate at the state
prison in Shirley.

Geoghan's crimes are despicable and how the Catholic Church defended him is
beyond reproach.
"Geoghan often targeted boys from broken homes, ingratiating himself
during frequent visits or fun outings. One victim said Geoghan molested him
as the two were driving home from getting an ice cream cone. Others said
Geoghan molested them after visiting their rooms at bedtime to tuck them in,
sometimes while whispering prayers."
Unsurprisingly, many are enjoying some schadenfreude because of his murder.
Its almost understandable, these untouchable men of faith are finally being
exposed for what they are: common criminals even after the backing and
support of an organization with billions of dollars and membership measured
in billions. Worse, sick men go into these holy professions to carry out
these crimes and the Catholics welcome anyone willing to be "celibate" for
Mr. Make Believe in the Sky.
But there is a real downside here. Now that its been established that
pedophile priests might be killed in prison, its certain that the Catholic
church will continue to empty its coffers into the bank accounts of better
lawyers and do more to cover-up these collar-wearing child molesters'
crimes. Also, expect bigger "hush money" settlements and "f****ving" DAs and
judges giving only slaps on the wrist. This is a sad day for those of us who
believe in justice. As its been established time and time again, the death
penalty is not a working deterrent, so this won't put a chill on Catholic
pedophiles, but it might make them be more careful knowing that their prison
term may be a de facto death sentence.

On a related note 160 priests are asking Rome to relax the rules on
celibacy. Of course it won't happen soon, if ever, but they are doing the
right thing. By allowing priests to act like healthy homo sapiens they won't
find other outlets for their natural *** drive and it will keep away those
who would use this job as a cover to abuse children. Will the Catholic rank
and file notice? Will they care? Something tells me no.

These people need another Martin Luther.

right "boys" - the problem is that you have homo***uals as priests - who
are demonized to start with and as the Pope noted are not interested in
the vows they took - but ARE interested in sodomizing young men .
NOT PEDOPHILES you baboon The obvious and real problem all
along is that these 'priests' were a homo***ual clique who went after
young men ..not children...These people need NOT TO PUT HOMO***UALS
around young men and then expect the young men NOT to be
Sodomized . bob

I'm not male and I will always remember a young priest in his car
following 11 year old me for ten frightening blocks on a quiet and
gray afternoon and entreating repeatedly "Come on, get in the car."

Don't blame homo***uality for this type of abuse.

Wrong BOOOB! the problem is that all priests are "demonized" and
putting them around anyone, man, woman or child is like the proverbial
fox in a hen house.
Priests are brainwashing head****ers, just like those bomberloving
muslim clerics, they need to be arrested and isolated from the general
public.

You missed the point again. You asked how many as if it were an impossible
thing that more than 160 wanted married priests. It is my estimation that
most do.

It is going to be a church with a very small number of clergy.
