The Glorious Twelfth
it refers to abstinence from alcohol. lodge members in temperance lodges
aren't sposed to drink. being a religious protestant organisation it isn't
looked upon very favourably in any lodge, at least by the leadership. (band
members aren't usually lodge members)
i was doing some work in their hq many years ago, and was getting disdainful
looks from their big boss every time he walked past me, along with much
muttering under his breath. he eventually stopped and gave me a lecture on
the evils of the demon weed, and requested that if i was going out to moke
that i stand well away from the building....
don't know for sure, but it's probably in rememberance of a platoon of the
36th ulster division, which was all but destroyed in the first days of the
battle of the somme in ww1. the ulster division was largely formed from
carson's uvf. references to the uvf in orange banners refer to that
organisation, not the modern terrorist group. a lot of orange marches (and
lodges) are in memory of that catastrophic event, especially if they're held
on the anniversary of the start of the battle, july 1
