Immigration Web site sells for $320 Owner says he expected more interest in auction By LAURA B. MARTINEZ The Brownsville Herald July 6, 2005 - An anti-illegal immigration Web site garnered $320 on an eBay auction, but its implications were much bigger than net sale, according to the Web site founder. Stopillegalimmigration.com was purchased on eBay by an individual or group of individuals known as "corporatemagic2" on July 1. The Web site, however, produced enough traffic to shed light on the issue of illegal immigration in the United States, said Los An-geles businessman Adam Christing, who founded the Web site. "I think that was definitely accomplished. I think we did over 15 radio and newspapers interviews across the country," he said. The 40-year-old placed the Web site on a 10-day auction to bring attention to the immigration issue. The Web site netted eight bids during its sale time. The first bid came in at $250 on June 26. The final bid came in Friday at $320. The auction ended Monday. Christing thought the Web site would sell for more due to the interest in illegal immigration throughout the United States. He said the low bids may be attributed to individuals having a problem locating the Web site sale on eBay. Twenty percent of the Web site sale will go to the Americans for Legal Immigration group, whose platform supports legal immi-gration, but is against amnesty, visa expansion or guest worker programs "designed to reward undo***ented immigrants or legal-ize their presence in the U.S." In a previous interview, Christing said he chose the group to receive the proceeds because he agrees with the group's four-point platform to address the illegal immigration problem. The group stands for securing the borders; against giving taxpayer benefits and incentives to undo***ented immigrants; crack-ing down on employers who intentionally hire illegals; and enforcing existing immigration laws when undo***ented immigrants are arrested for crimes. According to U.S Customs and Border Protection, 1.14 million undo***ented immigrants were apprehended in fiscal year 2004. About 905,000 were apprehended in fiscal year 2003. The Web site's auction comes just after the Minutemen's presence was made noticeable in the nation and the Rio Grande Valley. The Minutemen is a volunteer border patrol group that voluntarily patrolled the Arizona-Mexico border for 30 days. lmartinez@brownsvilleherald.com ON THE NET: http://www.stopillegalimmigration.com Posted by: Maurice Bernard on Jul 06, 05 | 12:00 am | Profile end :/ Halcitron - Minuteman misc.survivalism "illegals are like the flies outside my window, if I didn't have screens, I'd have a house full of flies." alt.politics.immigration,misc.survivalism,soc.cult ure.mexican.american,ca.politics |
