Personally, I'm quite happy as an agnostic - at least I don't make lots of silly statements in public and then claim "Science made me do it!"... -- - Jürgen Hubert Doing Time in Munich Military Diaries III, or: Bavarian Barkeeper http://juergen.the-huberts.net |

news:7accd9604abc56bf378940a62a56a06e@news.teranew s.com... have Not if they don't claim that it _can_ be proven. It's a matter of faith, or so I'm told. Of course, if believers of a religion _do_ claim that some of their beliefs can be scientifically proven, they open themselves up to scientific inquiry - and must live with its results. Hence my problems with the so-called "Creationism" - most of its adherents don't really understand what science is all about. But that's just one of the odd anecdotes that we Europeans love to share about Those Wacky Americans(TM). Over here in Germany, most religious leaders don't try to claim that they know science better than actual scientists - and most scientists try to return the favor by not arguing religion (which is an intensely private matter anyway...). Heh. It was a silly time, but now I'm well out of it... ;-) -- - Jürgen Hubert Doing Time in Munich Military Diaries III, or: Bavarian Barkeeper http://juergen.the-huberts.net |

news:8b57e8b80323e92e30405093c6c4b6a9@news.teranew s.com... proven, Sounds like an argument that one of these philosophers come up with - and I don't know much about philosophy. I'm a scientist, first and foremost. That means I learned how to prove that certain things exist, and how to disprove that certain things exist. But short of a direct divine intervention captured by sensors, it's impossible to do either with God. So if I am asked as a scientist if God exists, I can only answer: "Beats me." Still, there _are_ some matters that people take on faith - and scientists aren't immune to this, either. In fact, they often believe things that later turn out to be wrong (like the phlogiston theory about the propagation of light), though a good scientist will accept it when his favorite theory is proven wrong and move on. In your life, you have to believe in some things, or else you will be overcome with doubt and uncertaincy all the time - not a healthy state to be in. If some people believe in God and it works for them, who am I to argue with them? I only argue with them if they claim to be able to prove it... bring say: Can you prove that everything you see, hear, feel with your senses truly represents the real world? You can't - because it doesn't. We are all unable to percieve the "true reality" behind our senses - and no, I don't mean that in any "Matrix" sense of the word. So can anyone explain what the universe is _really_ like - and prove that he is correct? Nope. We can try to explain it in simple terms, but even these are "Lies-To-Children", as an author of a popular science book once said. We humans believe in all sorts of things just to get on with our lives. We would truly be incapable of doing anything if we demanded proof of everything most people take for granted. Is that also cheating? I don't think so. People saying that they believe in God doesn't bother me in the slightest. long Actually, I'm an agnostic, like I said - I don't know whether God exists or not, and I don't know of any way how I would be able to learn that on my own. But some of my best friends are devout Christians, and I don't have any problems with their faith. In fact, I think it makes them better people... news:a758ef51f595637d3a1ad8525ae473eb@news.teranew s.com... still Though sometimes there _is_ no real medicine. Just yesterday, I heard on my local public radio station (Bayern 2, the font of all knowledge) about a common surgical procedure (I think it had to do something with knees, though I don't remember the details). They did a study with two test groups - with one, they did the actual standard procedure, and with the other one, they just put the patient under narcosis, cut the knee open, and sewed it back together. A few months later, they asked the patients about how their knees felt - and they _all_ felt exactly the same... -- - Jürgen Hubert Doing Time in Munich Military Diaries III, or: Bavarian Barkeeper http://juergen.the-huberts.net |
