This is called 'progaganda'. Your apparent shock that governments can
use this tool is interesting as it implies naivety, not that this is
necessarily a bad thing, of course, in its place.

What is more interesting is that the much maligned US media have picked
it up. Could this be evidence of the disquiet in the US over the conduct
of the unwar in Iraq?

One US GI wrote the letter to his family condemning US force in Iraq.
The letter was picked up and read by his superior and reported to the
Army headquarter. He was then arrrested. He was dismissed and is
charged with esponage.

i read an interview today with a homeless vietnam vet, who pretty much
summed up a lot of people's feelings:

"Got themselves in something they can't get out of. Just like Vietnam.
You're not going to whup a motherf** that blows hisself up. (laughs)
You ain't going to whup nobody like that, you know. You ain't going to
find no American going to blow hisself up."
