Default Bajrang Dal vows to disrupt films on Staines, hails Dara

Bajrang Dal vows to disrupt films on Staines, hails Dara
Indo-Asian News Service
Bhubaneswar, October 31

Bajrang Dal has said it will not allow any films on slain Australian
missionary Graham Staines to be shot in India.

Instead, it would encourage films glorifying Dara Singh, who was
sentenced to death in September for killing Staines and his two minor
sons in 1999, it said.

"We have come across reports saying some people want to make films on
Staines," Bajrang Dal's Orissa president Subash Chouhan told IANS.

"We will not allow the producer to shoot," he said. "Such films will
encourage the conversion of poor tribals to Christianity. Rather we
would encourage films on Dara Singh," he said.

Bollywood film producer Sunil Agnihotri had said he was ready with the
script for a bilingual film on Staines.

Staines who came to India in 1965 was serving leprosy patients in
Baripada in northern Orissa's Mayurbhanj district. He and his two
minor sons, Philip and Timothy, were burnt to death by a group of
Hindu fanatics led by Dara Singh.

Agnihotri had reportedly said he was waiting for a "final word and
clearance" from Gladys Staines, the wife of the slain missionary, on
the film.

The proposed movie would begin in February and "should hit the
theatres by October next year," he was quoted as saying.

But the Bajrang Dal may not allow Agnihotri to go ahead.

Chouhan said: "Our activists will not allow him to shoot the film
anywhere in India."

Instead, he said: "The Sanskrutika Chetana Manch, a Mumbai-based Hindu
organisation, has planned to make a film entitled 'Dara - The Hero'."

Singh is very popular in Orissa's tribal pockets of Keonjhar and
Mayurbhanj.

"Bollywood scriptwriter Pratap Singh is writing the script for this
movie," he claimed.

However, he did not disclose the name of the director and the actors
who would play the role of Singh and Staines in the film.

Nashik-based Christian leader Dilip Wagh is also planning to direct a
film, "Balidan, Ek Sachai", on Staines. The movie will be released in
August next year, Bollywood sources claim.

However, Gladys Staines told IANS that she was interested in a
do***entary, and not a commercial movie, on her husband and sons.
