Default Christmas in jail for Cuban rebels

Christmas in jail for Cuban rebels
Wed 24 December, 2003 19:17

By Isabel Garcia-Zarza

HAVANA (Reuters) - Seventy-five opponents of President Fidel Castro's
government will spend a bleak Christmas behind bars after being
imprisoned in March, their relatives and supporters say.

"Cuban political prisoners are confined in punishment cells and are
living in conditions even animals should not be subjected to," Oswaldo
Paya, leader of Cuba's Christian Liberation Movement, said in a
statement on Wednesday calling attention to the dissidents' plight.

Cuban authorities have provided no information on the conditions under
which the prisoners are being held.

Cuba sentenced the 75 dissidents to prison terms of up to 28 years on
charges they were working with the United States to overthrow the
communist-run government.

The majority were supporters of the Varela Project, a petition
circulated by Paya's organisation calling for a referendum on moderate
political and economic reforms.

The wives of the imprisoned dissidents have set up Christmas trees in
their homes with ornaments and lights to remember their loved ones.

Seventy-four of the imprisoned dissidents are men.

The wives said they were allowed to visit their husbands only once
every three months and phone calls were strictly limited. Most of the
prisoners are serving their sentences hundreds of miles from their
homes.

"I have not heard anything for a month, and they won't even allow him
to call me for the holidays," said Dolia Leal, the wife of dissident
Nelson Aguiar, sentenced to 13 years in a prison on the eastern tip of
the Caribbean island.

Some family visits have coincided with the holidays, allowing
relatives to bring the prisoners some cheer.

"I am taking him a small tree and typical Christmas dinner of roast
pork, yucca, rice and beans, candy and pudding", said the wife of
dissident Hector Palacios.

Others, like journalist Ricardo Gonzalez, sentenced to 20 years, are
refusing to eat, according to his wife Alida Viso.

"He has been on a hunger strike since December 8, and in isolation
since the 14th," Viso said.

Afte the Iraq fiasco, I think the USA is going to think twice before taking
actions with anger. They just made a fool out themselves...
