Uncle Tom's Cuban Mike S. Adams \ July 18, 2003 I used to consider white liberals who praise Fidel Castro to be the most despicable people imaginable. That's probably because I have to deal with these people on a regular basis. I call them Starbuck's Socialists. You know the type. They spend about ten dollars a day to have other people make their coffee while they read the $20 deluxe edition of The Communist Manifesto at Barnes and Noble. They also spend a fortune to send their children to private schools with other white kids. Most of them are college professors. But now I've changed my mind. I've decided that black liberals who praise Fidel Castro are just as repugnant. This change of heart follows my recent discovery that NAACP President Kweisi Mfume has struck trade agreements with the Cuban dictator after a "good will and trade mission" to the communist nation. In fact, this happened in November of 2002 but I don't remember reading about it. That was back when I was reading the New York Times. However, in a November 12 NAACP press release, Mfume explained that his purpose in visiting Cuba was to "lend support to black farmers in the United States who would like to win export contracts with (Cuba)" and "to build a bridge between the NAACP and the people of Cuba, many of whom are descendants of Africa." Mfume also announced a meeting with the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba. In a November 14 NAACP press release, Mfume explained why he wanted to meet with communist leaders in Cuba: "(W)e hope to learn more about Cuba's education and health care systems, which offer free schooling and medical care to all citizens." The press release added "Although the U.S. has some of the best health care facilities and physicians in the world, African Americans continue to have a shorter average life span than whites . . ." To his credit, Mfume did meet with Cuban dissidents (although it took some persuading by the mayor of Miami). After the meeting, the NAACP reported that "(T)he dissidents claim that under the leadership of . . . Castro, the Cuban people are denied freedom of expression and freedom of religion." Furthermore, the NAACP reported, "The dissent leaders said they had been imprisoned and harassed by the government at one time or another because of their efforts to organize and call for change within Cuba." This quote was inserted only after noting that (the dissident leaders) "freely expressed their views to the NAACP delegation." The press release also ended with a quote from the National Assembly of the People's Power: "Most of these people (dissidents) just pretend to represent organizations. They have absolutely no support in our country." There are two reasons why I find Mfume's Cuban visit to be disturbing. First, it was unnecessary. Intelligent people can realistically assess the likely impact of communism on the plight of African Americans by examining the effects of socialist policies that have been adopted in the United States. For example, it is no coincidence that the Great Society initiatives of President Johnson were followed by skyrocketing rates of illegitimacy among African Americans. That rate is now at 70%. Interestingly, a search for the word "illegitimacy" yields no results on the NAACP website. Nor does www.naacp.org have anything to say about the disproportionate number of black babies aborted in the United States. After thirty years of modeling our reproductive policies after the communists, we are approaching a total of fifty million abortions in post-Roe America. When we do pass that mark, about 20 million of the abortions will have been performed on black babies. If abortions were performed equally across racial groups that number would be around six million. A second basis of objection to Mfume's visit to Cuba is its blatant hypocrisy. His willingness to pretend that human rights violations do not exist in order to advance economic interests-moreover agricultural interests-shows that he has indeed learned a lot from the institution of slavery. Namely, that freedom is expendable when it conflicts with the economic interests of the rich and powerful. Mfume is both. Black America can do without communism and socialism just as it can do without affirmative action and reparations for slavery. And it certainly has no need for dictators like Fidel Castro and Kweisi Mfume. Dr. Mike S. Adams (adams_mike@hotmail.com) is an associate professor at UNC-Wilmington.
-- "Nowadays, atheism is itself *culpa levis*, as compared with criticism of existing property relations."
