By the way Craig, did you design the site? I think it's really good -
very different to North Amercan styles (I'm currently doing a website
a week to keep the wolf from the door; the dot.com business is slowly
reviving again...)

: No thanks, that Rankin guy is just about the worst published author I've
: ever read.

You obviously haven't tried Colin Dexter then ...

The stories are overall very readable, though there is the element of one
dimensional casting of the main man. Boss out to get him, throws a wobbly,
does a double bluffing deal with the bad guys, case solved ! I would buy
more of the same even if there is a degree of accuracy in your opinion.

The TV show bombed in my opinion. I dont think John Hannah was the right
actor to play the part which didnt help. Did Rankin have much input to the
script ?

Laidlaw is a very good read but his character has had a very short shelf
life. I have Laidlaw, The Papers of Tony Veitch and Strange Loyalties.
Reading the Strange Loyalties I was feeling the same about Laidlaw as you
think of Rebus. Not his best attempt at a crime story given the first two
efforts, which I have read many times. Maybe that is why we have only seen
three crime stories from McIlvanney. The third was was not exactly a crime
story but a follow-up meandering tale of a cop struggling with life after
his brothers death. On a like for like basis it is harder to judge the
potential success of Laidlaw.

Which may be why the new series currently at the planning stage will
have a new actor playing the part.

Not known. Like I said, it is still at the planning stage.

Rankin himself has mentioned the possibility of Ken Stott taking over the
role.

I believe he also said he didn't mind who it was so long as it was on
the TV again!
